I did a past post search and found a lot of talk about this but I could not find an answer. I have, and it appears so do others, have a set of 5 State Quarters sealed that have acquired a gold-ish patina. This set is from Denver, 2002. Does anybody know what caused these to change appearance? These are NOT plated. The color looks more gold tone in person than in the scan. Almost a gold rainbow color. Maybe the word HUE would be appropriate.

Just a guess but sulpher gassing out of the cardboard holder? Nickel often tones to a light golden hue...

I don't have a blessed clue, but for future viewers: I've seen a bunch of these in circulation, too (also some late 1970s/early-to-mid-80s dimes with the same patina). "Goldish hue" is exactly it--no plating, not apparently any dirt or anything, just a strange golden appearance.

I think you'll call that toning - reacted with most likely sulphur.

Sopmetimes mint fresh copper nickel coins will take on a rather attractive gold tone, it depends on the storage conditions.

Seems to me the satin finish mint sets are more prone to this...

The golden toning is somewhat common on cupro-nickel coins, because I also see it frequently in circulation.
