When you are putting your sets together when you get to 1965-66-67 do you use the Special Mint Set or just circulation or BOTH?
Also for 1968-69-70-71-72-73 and 74S's do you use both the circulation 'S' and the Proof 's' ?
In the 1974's you would end up with 7 different coins, 8 if you count the Aluminum.
Putting mine together now and was just wondering, going to be all MS64 or better.

since I was 12 now I'm 41 I have been keeping rolls and going through them to make 1 roll of every year and mint mark sms, proof,p, d small date large date if I find a coin that I think is better than one I have I trade it out. just trying to make the best rolls anyone has ever seen but its up to you how you do your collection lol

All my coins from 59-69 will consist of sms and proofs I'll be posting my dansco 8181 today so you can check out what I have done so far just an fyi for the proofs once you put them in don't take them out complete a row then put all the coins in at one time

What I should have said also is that all my coins are in 2x2's then 3 ring binders, I have no Dansco albums.
For the SMS I thought they just came out for 1965-66-67, did they have them for earlyer years?

I was going by the Red Book but didn't know they had a 1964 SMS, that may be hard to get. Thanks daniels |

It's up to the collector. I personally feel that the SMS's do belong in the circulating cent set but not the proofs. I also include ALL the various small dates and varieties made for circulation and also those that are mint set only like the copper 2009 issues and matte finish. Some collectors will also want major varieties like the '72-D DDO, OMM's, and RPM's. Many collectors won't stop at just the circulating issues but also want the proof versions of the circulating issues. Others will want only the proof coins. There are a lot of ways to collect and so long as you're having fun then you're doing it right. You can always come back and add more coins to a set if you choose or delete them if you come to believe they aren't necessary. It can be difficult to decide how to display the coins and best to put some thought into before hand. If you use albums then more albums can be added to display the varieties and coins that don't have slots in the original. Decide what you consider a complete set and then pursue it. There are countless options and more will occur to you as you learn your series. Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Thanks cladking, I'm sure I know what I want to do,
but getting all the Mint Sets and Proof Sets up here is not easy we have no coin dealers.

My books are all circulating strikes. So...no SMS, proofs, Satins, etc.
I have proofs, etc, separate in boxes and such.

its all on what you want I started off with just circulation coins and I just found myself buying more cents from the 60's and figured I would do those in proofs and sms the 64 sms set is very rare and there is only 22 sms lincolns certified by pcgs from 64 I would love to get my hands on one

My binders hold 4 to a row so I've been trying to make each row P,D,S and proof for years where there were circulating S. For other years like 2005-2008 my binder row is P,D, SMS, S proof. It's kind of just because it's convenient to have a whole row for each year, but I also think it's working out great!

I have several sets of Lincoln Cents all in Whitman Classic Albums. The first sets are completed as Whitman made slots for and for the ones where there were both Proofs and regular coins minted, at one time I placed Proofs in those slots. I posted this in a post here a long time ago and most replies sort of said those proofs probably should really be the regular issued coins. I did change those back to just regular issued coins. I later made my own Albums using Whitman blank pages and press on letters/numbers. Two of them had no slots for proofs or error coins at all, just the P and D coins. Another home made Album starts with Flying Eagle cents, then Indian cents, then Lincoln Cents and in this one too, no proofs but normal S minted coins to make the set smaller. Also, in this set none of those large and/or small dates, only whichever I found first. I really don't like some manufacturer telling me what to collect. In all such Albums or Folders some company attempts to tell you what you should or shouldn't collect. I just make what I want and collect what I want. |

My memorial set is part of my of my old school collection, it's in a whitman folder and taken from circulation.
One of these day's I'd like to get an album, upgrade, and actually preserve this set, especially now that I have a '70-s small date.
I have most of the proofs but I leave them in their original housing.
