So, I know the ongoing "yeah, but they're not really worth that much" about silver certs. But--I kinda like 'em (when I was a kid I seem to remember us throwing half a dozen into our Monopoly set to use as "thousand dollar bills" for kicks and giggles because they looked so weird compared to the bills we were used to--welcome to the 90s, folks) and while I have close to a dozen that I've gotten out of circulation at my job, I've also heard the stories and seen the hauls from mutilated currency folders. Here is my dilemma: I don't have a regular bank branch. I have an account with Wells Fargo, but I do most of my banking online. When I do a box of pennies for CWR I go to a specific branch, but because of my budget that doesn't happen often--maybe once or twice a season. I'd like to look through that branch's MCF--it's hard to pull into and out of, and I think a lot of collectors have given it a pass based on the number of 19-teens pennies and silver dimes I've pulled from circulation at this bank (my old store also got about half a dozen IHC in a year's time out of rolls from this place--I have two of them). If I'm correct, their MCF could be a rich hunting ground. Any tips on how I'd go about asking for a flip through their folder? Do I have to buy the whole folder, search and then return it, or should I be able to do a flipthrough at a cubicle in the lobby or something? If I'm correct in my suspicion that I'm either the only or one of the only collectors who sometimes goes to this branch, this probably isn't something they hear often and I don't want to freak out any tellers. Dos, do-nots, tips, etc. would be appreciated--I promise to share any finds.

I do not know if branches would let you look at these folders. I've never considered that these folders even exist. Quote: but because of my budget that doesn't happen often--maybe once or twice a season.
Thats quite the austerity measures you have yourself under! Correct me if I'm wrong but searching rolls is basically free. Except the few you add to your collection.

@Amida: It is, but the problem is having the twenty-five bucks free--it takes me about a week to sort a box (my eyes are stronger than they used to be re: tiny details, but they still get tired about a third of the way through). I just got transferred at work and am only going to need about 1/3 of the gas money as before, so we'll see what happens there.
I know folks have posted before about going through these folders, but I don't know where to begin.

Nina, this is a common occurance for me. Whenever I go to a teller I ask if they have anything odd. Then when they usually say no, I say, "do you have any old bills in your mutilated pile?"
They love getting rid of them, as it's less work for them at the end of the week when they clean out their drawer and send it to the fed to be destroyed.
I've gotten 50 $1 silver certs, and then flipped them at my local coin show for $1.35 each. Not a huge score, but free money is free money, right?

Really just ask, and ask if any of the other tellers do as well. Ask about "small face bills". Alot of the new atms wont take the small face, and tellers dont like to give them out. Iv got one teller at one of my banks I saw the small fives, when he opened his draw, and asked about them, he told me he sends this stuff back once a month, and would save them for me to look at before returning. I bought all his 10's and 5's.last week he was working the drive through. I'm hoping to run into him tommorrow when I go to exchange coins and see how the pile looks. This is a merchant heavy bank, so I am anticipating at the least small face bills.

Thanks, SJU! I didn't even think of using my questions about halves and "big dollars" as lead-ins--shows you how often I do this.
oih8, hang out in the bill section more often, I've seen them talked about here often.
Halfhunter: does each teller have his/her own MCF? I might have better luck toward the end of the day if that's so.

Hi Nina
I believe they do, or I think they sell the "old paper money" to the merchant teller. If you can get in the bank with no one around that is better as well, with no one in line behind you, you have a better chance at your teller being able to ask other tellers if they have anything for you. I also think you will have better luck at a bank with alot of business traffic. One of my half dollar dump banks is a really awesome branch, but they never order coin, they are self sustaining, not much business traffic, I have yet to find anything there. My other dump bank is where I found the guy, and did get several small face bills.Very heavy merchant traffic to the point of every teller is a business teller.
I think you will have better luck referencing small face bills instead of mutilated. Good luck, my best find is a 1934 10$ bill. I have yet to find any silver certs or red seals this way, but I have only tried a few times.

Well how did you do?
My guy had several small face 100's and 50's I passed on, got one 20$ from the 80's and a few 5's, and common newer 2's. I kept one five from 1977, and the rest I'm spending.

Halfhunter, my paycheque this past week was short (they didn't add the day I worked at another store, so I was $70 short) and I didn't get to go to the bank for pennies or the MCF, as I'd planned. Also, my car cannot be re-registered due to engine problems it would cost more than he's worth to fix. So, any trip down to the bank will be an all-day thing now, as I'm reduced to a bicycle and the bank is six miles away.
