Hey guys, Just thought I would share my finds from today. Went through two boxes of pennies and found these two. Was a nice find because I was missing this coin. The second one has some damage on the 8 and right on the point of the 5 making it look kind of blunt but I am almost certain it is pointed. Nothing too special but better than two boxes of nothing. I am still hunting for a *zinc* 2007 (5 boxes to date, no luck...) Edited by pennymax 10/21/2012 9:52 pm

The first one is pointed 5. The second one is 100% blunt. Very nice to find one of these 85 pointed 5's

Agreed. Top coin is P5, bottom is B5. If by 2007 steel you mean zinc (and therefore non-magnetic), I think the current consensus is that they were only minted for sets, despite the reported mintage of 9,625,000 shown in Charlton.

The scan does a terrible job of showing it but I am certain the second is a pointed 5, I will try to get a different angle shot.

Sorry I meant zinc, I'm loosing it, too much CRH :P As for that consensus, I had no idea. I saw the 9,625,000 and I couldn't understand why I was not finding any! That makes me feel much better.

I understand your confusion; the tip of the 5 on this penny does look pointed. However, it is a damaged blunt 5.
The two styles of 5 in these 1985 pennies, known by blunt 5 and pointed 5, are quite different. First, the top half and bottom half of the blunt 5 are approximately the same height, whereas the pointed 5 has a much taller bottom half than top half. Second, within the top half of the 5, the two parts that come together at a right angle are about the same thickness in the pointed 5, whereas in the blunt 5 the horizontal portion is almost twice as thick as the vertical portion. Take a look at a known blunt 5 and compare the style of 5 to each of these pennies. I think you'll see that the pointed 5 shown in the first photo is quite different from the others.

Thank you for the explanation LaureateBust. I had no idea of those differences, I always just looked at the point of the 5. Looking at the two coins now keeping your advice in mind I completely agree. The second one is a blunt 5 that is damaged and the damage made the 5 look pointed.

Bottom one is a blunt 5. Look at the gap between the loop of the lower part of the 5 and the stem of the upper part of the 5. Pointed 5's have a narrow gap, blunt 5's have a wide gap.

Quote: I saw the 9,625,000 and I couldn't understand why I was not finding any! Yeah this figure was published (unfortunately) without proper reading of the mint's report. That's how many zinc cents were made IN 2007. They were all DATED 2006, though -- except for the few 2007 zincs known in sets. I got mine from a hockey set.

Quote: I had no idea of those differences, I always just looked at the point of the 5. It's hard to appreciate the differences until you've seen both in-hand. I had stared down so many blunt 5 1985 pennies by the time I found my first pointed 5 that the recognition was based more on the fact that the 5 looked "wrong", and less that it was pointed. Nice to find a problem-free example as your first. My first was slightly bent and hard on the eyes. Luckily I've found a second since then!
