First, verify for me that South Africa was the first. Krugerrand

US Eagle
Canada Maple Leaf
Australia What is the nickname?

If any of you are members of the Liberty Seated Collector's Club you might already know why I hunted for the Krugerrand which I got yesterday.

For all of the others, here is the link:

Thanks in advance.

Oh YES, the Austrian Philharmonic! I remember TV ads for those.
"A rare opportunity to own ..." but you all know the drill.

British Britannia? Sounds nice.

Every 15 minutes or so I play with the Krugie. It spins around and makes a lovely clicking sound
as it hits the table. You see, it is destined to be melted and recast as a commemorative medal.
So, if it hits the floor I WOULD NOT CARE!

When Vinny first handed it to me I said, "WOW! This is heavier than I imagined."

An ordinary, 1904 $20 gold piece plus $50 = One Krugerrand.
The point, as explained to me, was that our members have bought gold in the past at substantially lower prices.
Additionally, an ounce for an ounce is insurance against any future fluctuations in price between now and next year.

I will enjoy it until I send it off to the Liberty Seated Collector's Club.

BUT, the three acceptable trades were the Eagle, the Maple Leaf and the Krugerrand.
I asked this question to send the answers to the committee to see if they would accept a Philharmonic, for example.

Thanks

While it is by no means comprehensive, the Wikipedia page is a good place to start.

so you hunted the Krugerrand because of the medal on that site? I am not understanding something I am sure. Can you explain it to me please. Is it that you sent them the Krugerrand to melt down or something to make the medal?

Didn't Saudi Arabia also have a 1 oz gold coin? I'm sure I'm not imagining it.

This link explains it better than I can:

http://lsccweb.org/SilverGoldMedal.php

Not explained in the link are these reasons:

1) Many members would have purchased gold bullion years ago at much lower prices.

2) A one ounce for one ounce trade provides immunity from any changes in the price of gold.

Also, a member may request that his or her last name be added to the edge along with the .999 and the member #.

The gold will be melted and then recycled, much as
gold has been melted and recast for thousands of years.

edit
The initial trial strike of the gold proved to be unacceptable. The remedy will be to design a narrower diameter and to increase the thickness.
