I want to take up panning or using sluice to extract gold as a hobby in the uk but where do I start and how? Any help appreciated. Where do I look for pay dirt etc without digging quarry's etc. remember I want to do this as a hobby and not to make my millions. I will be happy if I find just a few flakes. I'm in England so this might be difficult. Please help and if I were to find a honey hole I might even send you a nugget of two

Your logical first step would to be to contact the
British Gold Panning Association.
They should be able to clue you up on hobbyist gold prospecting and the U.K. Law, where to get gold fossiking equipment (either 2nd hand or new), and where to go prospecting.

In Australia, a metal detector is a good first instrument to use before using panning or sluicing equipment. Most fossikers in Oz. don't even bother with anything except a metal dectector, with a discriminator circuit tuned to ignore ferrous man made objects and minerals.

In the U.K. you have an advantage. There is much more opportunity to find treasure trove.

Might want to check on the law first unless its common land then you might have issues.
Some abandoned mine areas that might be worth while are
Great Orme area lots of copper deposits gold is usually found as a by product of copper mining.
Silver in Devon Combe Martin pretty much all commercial mining has been abandoned in Devon/Cornwall so there are plenty of old mine sites
Wales and Scotland are your best bet for gold.

If you want pay dirt to pan buy some off of ebay. I bought some for just a few dollars. I found enough to make me happy. Not a good hobby though. Panning for gold is bad on the back

Do you think it's worth trying just local rivers and streams as there's loads by me? I'm just not sure what part of watercourses I should look at . Bends in river/ deep areas/ shallow/ sandy areas/ rocky areas. Any help as I am a 100% novice in this . Any tips will help
