I have been adding some modern commemoratives to my collection lately....some just the coin....some coin with felt box...some with inner box,coa and outer box.My question is, how much does not having the outer cardboard box and coa decrease the value of the coin? Opinions please on collecting commemoratives without all the paperwork........thanks for the thoughts

It probably really doesn't matter but I like to get mine with all the OGP. If you look on ebay, you'll see alot of the either slabbed and no packaging or raw and no packaging bringing just as much as a coin in OGP. I do know that it would be a much more compact collection in an album. The boxes take up a bit of extra space.

I like to buy them in OGP, but will one day put them in a dansco, then store the packaging in a rubber are tub or something.

Id venture to guess a good amount of people throw the OGP away. It can be cool to have but overall the difference is miniscule. Its readily available so it doesn't really bring any premium right now

If it is that big a deal you can usually buy the boxes empty if you get a deal on a "naked" coin

Quote: I like to buy them in OGP, but will one day put them in a dansco, then store the packaging in a rubber are tub or something. I still have all of the OGP materials from my cracked proof sets (coins put in Dansco albums) and the two commemorative coins I have in my 7070 (both versions of the 1982 Washington Half Dollar). I would not pay extra for the OGP materials, nor would I expect a discount for not having them. This is not a rule, as there are people who insist on having the OGP materials and will pay extra for them. The answer depends on your goal. If the coins are going into an album, I would not fret about not having all of the OGP for all of the coins.

It would be nice to be able to buy coins directly from the mint without all the fancy OGP packaging and at a lower cost. Some of the boxes these coins come in must cost quite a bit to make especially the nice polished timber Jobie's. I too keep all this packaging, Not sure why but I just hate throwing stuff out that ain't broken. The nicer boxes do come in handy at Christmas and birthdays when you give the granddaughters jewelry as pressies If there was an option at the mint to buy "Plain brand" coins without the packaging "bling" I would assume that the coins would be discounted accordingly. After all I only want to collect the coin anyway
