A numismatic colleague of mine, related this recent incident to me. It involves those traveling numismatic road shows, that set up in hotels. I have repeated his comments here, to reach a wider audience.

Quote:
The Canadian Coin Association was in town and had a buying event. I decided to see what it is all about and if they are really as bad as everyone says. So I took the following coins and an old Rolex watch from 1966 there to be evaluated and hopefully receive an offer to purchase (had NO intention to sell).

I arrived there and was greeted in an overwhelming way. So I asked the lady there if she was familiar with Canadian coins as I had a few that I needed to sell. I gave her the sob story of money being tight, etc., a story that I had them for a long time and need to get rid of the stuff. I said I had some old 50 cent pieces and silver dollars.

1870 50c AU50
1871H 50 cent AU 50
1871 50c Cent AU 50
1932 50 cent EF 45
1939 50 cent MS62
1948 50 cent MS63
1967 50 cent
1967 25 cent x3
1967 10 cent
1945 $1 MS62
1947 $1 P7 MS 62
1948 $1 MS62
1938 $1 MS64

I had all the coins wrapped in kitchen paper individually and placed in an old watch box I have. I started to show her the 1967's first, she said 'oh they are common, for the silver 50-cent we pay $3 and for the quarters and the dime $3 together. Total $6

Then I showed her the 1870, both 1871s , the 1932, 39 and 1948 50 cent pieces - all together, on a bad day worth between $8-10K. She said, 'quite common pieces, just metal value, we pay $ 3 each.'

I rest my case. Luckily, there was a witness, another man who wanted to sell some silver coins, he did not sell after he heard my conversation. I never even showed her the dollars. She had mentioned earlier that they pay $8 for each silver dollar.

My blood was boiling. So I called her a crook and a rip off artist, as she had very clearly seen the dates on the coins. Their newspaper ad clearly states "Coin Values are based off the Charlton Coin Guide" She asked me to (f....g) leave now or she would call the RCMP. I invited her to do so, but she retracted fast when she realized that I was serious for her to call. I said, 'the moment you show me your business license, I will leave. If you do not have one, I will call the police.'

I had to ask 5 times... finally she produced one. They paid $500 for 4 days. Tomorrow I will get a copy of it at our City Hall, then on to the newspapers to see if they are interested in my story. What a royal rip-off!! I Googled the outfit, and they used to be called The Great Canadian Road Show. They recently changed their name to Canadian Coin Association, owned by Terry Coutros. Only a search in 'Whois.com' for Canadiancoinassociation.com revealed that information their website has only a 800 number (have not called it yet). Business resides in Concord, Ontario.

I suspect this is preaching to converted, in this forum... but the word definitely needs to be spread.

This is merely speculation, but it is ironic that Concord is right next to Richmond Hill - less than 15 km apart (all part of North York) where Googy Marketing is located - maybe this is where a prolific ebay seller gets all their coins...

The company "gold pros" are around Kingston Napanee Gananoque (Ontario) every weekend. They have radio ads that make it sound like a good idea to sell them stuff.

8xFace for silver would be too high for them.

You fail to mention 1 thing..They brag about having a list of buyers ready to buy rare dates..BS when the guy seen what I had his eyes sunk in his head and made me offers that p.....d me off....Hows this one 1880 Newf. gold certified MS+ .His answer not on the list ? 1890 h half VF offered me 175.00 saying they pay half of G4 value for un certified coins...When I supplied 50 + coins along with the CCN + other stuff..I was told now get this.... " You know to much about coins, we dont want your kind here now please leave " to which I replied No problem and so as left I played the recorded message from my phone to all the people in waiting.. hummmmmmmmm maybe I was a bad boy to do that hahahhaha

I really hope this isn't true as I would hate the fact that I have given them business if this is the case of how they're getting coins.

I went to travelling hotel coin thing here in New hampshire one time. Just brought some junk silver. Offered me like 20% of value. I was laughing inside. However the guy did say to me and my brother that we should probably just keep what we had, because he knew he couldnt offer me more than what he had. I respected him for that. But I just wish these kind of things didnt exist

Wow, thanks for sharing the story SPP, I hope the newspapers publish it. The people that really need to read this, are the ones who know nothing about coins, and think places like that are honest.

I have asked 'asynpaper' (One of asyn's other accounts) where they get all the notes they sell from before, and I was told "The notes come from various sources" I would assume the coins come from the same place. However, I wouldn't be surprised if they were the ones hosting these events.

Publication would be a good idea. Even if it's in the propaganda monster that is Metro and 24 Hrs, we could use it against the machine. Only $40 to get an ad in with these free papers so at least people would know to stay clear of these places.

Thanks for publicizing this. Identifying the business names of some of the grifters is always helpful.

My guess is that 90% of the poeple reading these posts here are already aware and know better than selling their numismatic material to these crooks.I also know that the eye catching advertising in the local papers around the country attract many innocent victims to the slaughter house.
Before running to get taken,I would ask for guidance or seek another opinion before giving away the farm.

I've always known about their crooked ways. What frustrates me when I hear stories like this, is all the times they've ripped off some unknowing senior whose coin collecting spouse has passed away.
Sometime there may be a diamond in the rough. They bring in their spouses' coins and these C.C.A. crooks tell 'em their 1921 nickel is just silver melt and offer them 40 cents for it!ARRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHH

This is infuriating and the potential link to googy, although speculative, is downright scary. Thanks for posting.
