Gday All, a new member here from New Zealand. (I posted this elsewhere on this forum but got no replies on the problem...)
I was going through some coins I had put up for a $1 start on our local auction site and noticed the Shield nickel was a little different to others I had seen. I note that it appears to have some sort of die crack between the words United and States, also there is a line on the last 2 in 1882, could it be another number under the 2? Had a look at the 82/83 overdates but couldn't see the line on any of those. The pix are a bit rough but the best I could get for the moment. Any comments would be appreciated...
cheers, Ian

Yes that is a die crack o the reverse, I can see it running through the tops of ITED S and then it looks like it jumps from the top tight of the S to the rim over the T. this is not unusal. They had a LOT of trouble with die cracks on the Shield nickel because of the hardness of the coppernickel alloy. Die life on this series ranged from around 15 thousand coins per die pair in the early years to about 23 thousand coins per die pair. Die carcks are VERY common and it is almost impossible to find a coin that doesn't have them.

The 2 on the 1882 date punch was very heavy and the die would very frequently start to chip or break down around the 2 causing the line you see and later filling in the 2 making it appear to almost be a solid lump. Coins with clear well formed 2's are hard to find. It is not another digit under the 2.

Gday Conder101
Thanks very much for that informed reply, guess I haven't got a $100 coin then...but I will still keep it from the $1 auctions. Will definitely be looking out for more Shield nickels for my collectin as well.
cheers!
