It has nothing at all to do with the US Mint, it does have everything to do with how those coins have been stored in the 26 years since they were minted. Proofs are very susceptible to hazing if improperly stored.

Thanks. This makes sense. The bag it was in smelled moldy/musty. I got this set for WAY below gold value so I couldn't say no because of the damage.

Hazing is a normal process for these types of sets.

At least the dollar still has silver value. Did yours change as you've owned it or did you find/buy it that way? Like I said earlier, the price on my set was so sweet, I couldn't say no. I'll separate the gold and sell off the other two coins. This should cover about half of my expenses .

I don't have the gold coin but both the dollar and the half I do have are in perfect condition with no "Hazing" whatsoever

mds308, It was a purchase from the mint back in 86. I lived in the Pacific Northwest then and I feel the moisture there had something to do with the toning. This one was a brother but it seems to have a better look.

I dont mind how these look. I wonder if this is the early stage of a really neat toning?
