Stopped at my local coin dealer over lunch with the goal of picking up a $10 and $20 Gold Certificate for my slowly growing U.S. Currency Type collection. He didn't have a $10 Gold Certificate that I liked for the price, but I did pick up a semi-decent $20 Gold Certificate: Just before leaving, I noticed that he also had a decent looking $5 Gold Certificate (which caught me by surprise, since I didn't even realize they made $5 Gold Certificates): The price seemed decent and I was running late, so I decided to get both of them (along with a Series 1914 Ten Dollar Federal Reserve Note that I may post about another time). It wasn't until I got home and went to look it up that I realized that it's actually a Silver Certificate and not a Gold Certificate. And then, of course, I finally discovered that it's actually one of those North African Emergency Notes I've heard about... Strangely enough, when I was putting together my list of notes that I wanted to eventually have for my "Type" collection, I purposely did not include these Emergency Notes, thinking they weren't really a separate type. Now that I have it in hand, though, I really like it. Anyway, I think I paid about $80 for the note (I made him an offer on all three notes together, so it's hard to break down how much each one cost exactly). Not what I thought I was getting, but I'm still happy to have it!

Yes. Yes, it does.
But all I saw at the time was the yellow seal.
Did I mention that I'm an idiot?

Idoitic? No. A little bit of "tunnel vision" perhaps. So, would this be a North Africa Note? Either way, you are at least "two-up" on me in the currency department. Congrats!

Yep, it's a North African Emergency Note. Not having researched these previously (only heard about them in passing) I always assumed they said "North Africa" on them somewhere. Not so, apparently...

I'm a long way away from anything I would consider a "complete" type set (and I'm still trying to figure out what I even mean by "complete" type set), but here's what I have so far: My Obsolete U.S. Currency CollectionI hope to add some Educational Notes someday, but something tells me I'm probably never going to own any $1000, $5,000 or $10,000 notes. For that matter, I seriously doubt I will ever be able to afford older $50 and $100 notes...

Another dumb question is in stall...
Is gold certificate still redeemable by today government standard? Silver certificates aren't, so gold is probably in the same boat. I guess!

Barryg, I have about about 200 notes, mostly $1's and $2's, but being a Type collector, I really don't need (or really want) the "extras". I am trying to sort/scan them for sale to finance some of my 7070 gold page.
I just noticed the word GOLD on the right and left hand side on the face of the note between the scrolls halfway up the sides.

Quote: I have about about 200 notes, mostly $1's and $2's, but being a Type collector, I really don't need (or really want) the "extras". Well, I'm just starting to get into Type collecting myself (over the last year, actually), but I also have a stack of silver certificates from the 1930s and 1950s, as well as plenty of $2 Red Seals from the 50s and 60s. I just can't help hoarding them when I find them (or can get them cheap). It's like finding wheat cents in my change -- I can't bear to spend them even though I know most aren't worth anything over face value. Ah well, if I hold onto them long enough, maybe they'll eventually be worth something and I can start selling them off one at a time to help pay for my retirement years...

The $5 is an Emergency note which was used during WW II for military use in combat area of North Africa & Europe ( I think prefix "K" would define it as well). For other US Emergency Notes please click link below: http://usrarecurrency.com/WorldWarI...uesNotes.htmI have noticed ( as other members definitely did) that the "Seal" is in different shade (it tends to be Orange or Light Brown) where it is basically, Yellow: http://usrarecurrency.com/1934A$5Si...4087956A.htmWell, I do not claim that it is one of US Error notes (Ink errors), but it's a "variety" after all and worth consulting one of the specialized collectors/dealers for a second opinion. Eventually, it's worth a shot! Nice collection by the way, & thanks for sharing ..... Wishing to see one of the "Educational" series (Silver Certificates) in your collection in the future! Cheers

Quote: Wishing to see one of the "Educational" series (Silver Certificates) in your collection in the future! You and me, both! The dealer I buy most of my currency from actually has a $1 Educational Note in stock that he's willing to sell for $300. Aside from the fact that $300 is a lot to spend on a single note, it's not in very good condition and I think I'd actually like to spend a little more to get better quality if I'm going to spend that type of money in the first place. He told me that his paper money doesn't tend to move very quickly, though, so maybe I'll reconsider at some point...

I would hold out for a better note too barryg. Maybe after I complete my 7070 gold page (two plus years down the road, if I am thifty) I can move back to my currency folder.
