I have just started a nickel collection of high grades (post-1999 is my goal) and there are many confusions I've ran into. I will also post pictures in this thread.

>>> First of all, when I find a nickel with an unusual finish from a bankroll, how would I know if it's proof-like? Is the sharp edge the only factor?

>>> Then, there comes the grading confusion. As I was reading the population report from CCCS online, I discovered that there were both MS nickels and UNC ones graded. Any ideas on the difference?

>>> In books and websites, I have read that a MS 65 coin is allowed to have minor scartches. This fact really drive me into confusion. Maybe the following photos will aid me explain my question further:

2012 Old Style Toonie: Appears that there is only one visible scratch I could see, which is deep and noticable. How much of the grade would this problem affect?

2011 Loonie: Now major scratches but two chains of minor scratches. How would these problems affect grade?

As well as this 2000P Nickel:

What about rim damage? Dents on the rim of a coin?
This is a 2010 Nickle.

Thank you and I appreciate your time. I have many questions for my collection.

For your first questions, I really can't answer them, but I'd grade the toonie at MS64 because I think the gouge is too deep to allow 65.
The loonie might make a MS65.
The 2000 Nickel would probably get a MS 62/63, because the scratches are consistent, it looks like it may have been in circulation for a short period of time.
The 2010 Nickel definitely wouldn't get a MS65 because the gouges are too plentiful and deep adn retract from the eye appeal quite a bit.

Also, CCCS calls coins that were meant for circulation MS, and coins that were struck for sets for collectors UNC.
ICCS calls the circ. ones MS and collector one MS NBU. (numismatic brilliant uncircuilated.)

Thank you and I really appreciate your help.
Yes, another thing is fingerprint or minor traces of circulation or rim damage

I heard once before that fingerprints make MS into AU?

I have a few proof coins still in the packaging. When I put my finger on the plastic
I can see a clear reflection on the surface of the coin.

This test came in handy when I looked at a set of State Quarters that my mom
was saving from circulation. One stood out. The edge was sharp and it reflected
my finger tip. A "spent" quarter.

The same test may work for proof-like coins as well.

All modern coins made for circulation are MASS produced and a cetain amount of "Bagging" is apperent even before they leave the mint as a result.
These are normaly slight dings and small marks due to all the coins being stored and dropped into large bins.
If the marks are pronounced {regardless of lustre) then the coin is deemed to have been circulated.

Petersun, you can't learn to grade mintstate coins online through photos or discussion. You can only learn with coin in hand.If there is no one to act as a mentor you can attend shows or view dealer's offerings. You can also buy ICCS MS65 and 64 coins on ebay(most recent model 5cents are inexpensive)and use them for comparison.
You are extremely unlikely to find MS65 coins in bank rolls, normally coins of this grade come from unopened mint rolls, available at dealers and on ebay and occasionally found at banks.
There are no proof-like coins in the years you are looking for.
MS coins are for circulation and come from rolls
UNC coins are special strikes available only in sets
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...
