how do you know if you found a proof?
Most proofs have mirrored field, frosted devices, and squared rims. Even after circulating, these characteristics are usually still easily detectable.

Of course, certain date and mint combinations are only available in proof strike. Knowing these combinations are helpful when roll hunting. For example, in general (with a few exceptions, for example, NIFC 40% Silver Eisenhower dollars, Kennedy half dollars, and Washington quarters; 1979-1981 Susan B. Antony Dollars; and the 2012 ATB Quarters), all S minted coins are proof strikes, if minted after 1968 for Half Dollars, Quarters, and Dimes; after 1970 for nickels; and after 1974 for cents.
