I've pulled both the coloured and plain versions from bank rolls, but the portrait is different (not discussed on the RCM site that I've seen). The coloured version has a shiny portrait, and the plain version has a frosted (cameo?) portrait. This ebay auction (not me) has them as well..

I was expecting the shiny portrait for both versions, do I have a special version?

The mint did mention that the non colored coin would be frosted.

So this means we might see a frosty red or a non-frosty non-red variety.

Picked up a roll today and got 11 reds.

There is another potential for errors: similar to the Men's Hockey quarter in 2009, the year "1812" is engraved on the maple leaf for the non-red variety and it is ink jetted on the maple leaf for the red. Maybe we'll see some odd combos...keep your eyes open!

I bought 10 from the mint. They were selling them at face value and with no shipping! So why not?

Tango thanks for sharing, they seem to be "awaiting stock" right now, hopefully they will have some more soon. I'd like to get my hands on some of those :P

Picked up some rolls at RBC yesterday. The frosted ones are a nice change, wonder why they didn't apply the frosting to the obverse as well, probably to keep cost down. How will the frosting hold up in circulation? We'll soon see

It interesting to see a "cameo" by design on a circulation coin.

Is the technique to accomplish this similar to proofs or something new?

Five coins will be issued. Four for people (quaters) Brock , Tecumseh, Charles de Salaberry and Laura Secord. These quaters will likely all have two versions as mentioned above. The twoonie of HMS Shanno rounds of the series.

I just found my first circulation Brock with the frosty face. A cruise ship customer from Vancouver spent it in the boutique. The cameo effect is a nice touch for a modern circulating coin.
