As you know, I'm new to this VAM thing. I found another coin I thought would be easy to attribute.

Here's what my research led me to:
http://www.vamworld.com/Peace+VAM+Attribution+101

On this page, the die break from left to right of the neck through the fields is what I see on the coin I have in hand, a '22 P

Is-There-A-VAM-Number-For-This-Die-Break-On-A-'22-P-Or-No?
Note: This incredibly helpful image was created by the helpful folks at VAMWORLD and they of course get the credit.

Just posting here so you can more easily see what I'm talking about.

Scrolling down a ways to the section on die breaks, this is what it says on that page:
" Peace dollar die cracks generally occur in the following places:

Obverse:
-Through the bottom of Liberty's neck, sometimes extending into the field or letters, and occasionally making a circular pattern around the left hand side of the entire coin.
-Through the tiara, sometimes extending into the field or hair
-Through the top of the hair bun, generally extending vertically downwards

Although quite impressive, these cracks will/would not be listed."

The heart of the matter:
Alright, so my coin here doesn't get a number because the die break is so common? Or... what did I miss?

Thanks again!

Yeah, you missed it.

Die CRACK is not listed.
Die BREAK is.

The picture above shows die CRACK from left to right of the neck through the field above TRVST all the way to right of Y.

Ah, yes. So the crack is not listed, so there is no VAM number for my Peace dollar because all that shows is that crack.

Understood, thank you!

Scropper ... not exactly. All Morgan and Peace dollars are VAMs. Undiscovered die marriages (new discoveries) don't have a number until Leroy looks at them and determines they deserve their own listing. He is the only authority that can do this. Insignificant (again this is in Leroy's eyes) changes to the die, like die cracks, won't earn a separate designation. Your coin most likely has a VAM # but you should ignore the cracks in your search to attribute it.

I see!

Thanks for that, SeatedNut!

So that's intersting that this crack can't be attributed to a single obverse die.

In other words, I'll look at all of the other details to see which one it is. Very well, I'll give that a try.

Personal note: How's your family?

Not necessarily, but you won't find them listed crack-by-crack. That effort is just at the very beginning with Morgan VAMs, much less Peace. Your task, should you wish to use the crack to help with attribution, is to look at every single VAM for the year and see if you luck on to a picture which shows it.

Given the prevalence of die cracks in both series, it's an enormous task to try and index them.

Aha. Well, I'll do as I do with Colonials and other early coppers: Find the next most obvious thing!

Thanks SuperDave!

(and for the record, I already gave it a quick try. I'll come up with more time and check back in with my results!)
