Another buy in today, first a 1970 English proof set. It may be dated 1970 but I suspect these were released much later like in 1972  Box speaks of decimal currency in past tense and envelope (Photo blurry due to size rules here) has printing date for 2/72 which means February 1972, around the same time T Rex released Telegram Sam! (Been reading a magazine on British glam pop acts of the early 70s  ) Did you know you could see T Rex for only 75p! Who would see a concert now for 75p?  Set is very nice after 48/50 years. Sadly the shiny case means reflection in the shot and the booklet was there too.  Coins were all stinning except some tarnishing on the Penny and Halfpence. Does anyone know exactly when the set was released and how much it actually cost. Also what metal is that medal made out of? Edited by Princetane

It would not be a Princetane post without some Halfcrowns and Florins.   4 Halfcrowns, very Worn 1817 Bull head and 1820 GIV (I paid under melt for these) for spacefilling Upgraded 1834 (From Fair to gVG) and 1924 (From aGood to VG/Fine)  Florins - 1896, 1914, 1924, 1925, 1932, 1945 and 1960/64. All but 1924 and 1945 were new add ons. These two were upgrades. The 1925 and 1932 are particularly good to get. |

Detail of scarce 1925 and 1932 coins   1925 Barely VG or just under, this coin was fairly cheap at $12 (£6)   1932, the dealer wanted $60 after much stress, I beat him down to $35, barely VG but a key date to have and it completes my Florin run from 1917 to 1970.  Both coins I aim to upgrade as this is the "Accumulate as many dates as you can phase"  |

Just a blank envelope. I noticed they used past tense in the language, which suggests these coins were a business strike from 1971 or 1972 dated 1970. I can't find any info online as yet.

Yes has a nice even wear over it. I think that was the last year of standard circulation of that type.

2 more florins to Plug those gaps   1916 Good Fine - a decent piece and completes my collection back to 1914. Even better was the coin cost barely above melt price. The coin cost $15 and has $13 of silver when I bought (Now $11.80).   1930 EF or near it - this coin is replacing a decent example already (Close to VF) but I just love this design and the coin was really cheap for what it is (NZD $25 or £12.75) and I just had to buy it. Unlike my other replaced coins, I may keep the other 1930 coin as well. Edited by Princetane

Nice additions Dorado and Princetane! Princetane - I'm pretty sure the 1970 Royal Mint proof set originally cost £3.50. I remember persuading my parents to buy me one for Christmas, and I'm fairly sure that was Christmas in 1971! I think they were released just after Decimalization and they were certainly on sale until about 1973. I think The Royal Mint medallion is bronze, but don't know if they changed to copper-clad steel after 1992... There was a small coin collecting club at my school, and the senior boy who ran it, who would have been about 17, refused to get the 1970 proof set as he thought it was too expensive and that the mintage figure was too high (100,000). I've just obtained my first 2021 coin - the White Greyhound of Richmond £5 from the Queen's Beasts series. I think the RM issues far too many £5 coins, but I decided to complete the series of these as I already had the first four in the set:   Edited by NumisRob

It is quite a nice coin and I know that Royal Beasts set is a large series that has been going since 2016 at least. It's better than most NCLT as its not gimmicky and silly (Check out some of the garbage our colony Niue issues). Thanks for the Info on that set, they must have had multiple issuings of it as I can read Printer code and 2/72 definitely means Feb 1972. A guy on trade me (NZ ebay type site) is disputing with me that the holder for his 1967 set is original, when it clearly says 9/75 and measurements of the coins are only in Metric (NZ did not go metric until 1974/1976). It is easy to get confused as the dollars had the same design in 1967 and 1975/76. I also thought that the 1970 proof coins had mintages around 750,000 - so some were being sold loose. I can see why people were not that keen on buying it if it cost £3.50 when inside was obselete currency with a face value equivalent of 37p! |

I don't think any 1970 coins went into circulation. I was in the UK at the time ad they would have attracted attention. Also, by the time they were released (post decimalisation day, 15th Feb 1971) most of the coins were already redundant.
I suspect the 750,000 figure more accurately reflects the number of sets issued as they are still common in the UK. I have handled maybe a dozen in the last year - they sell consistently in the £15 to £20 range.

Thanks I agree, they sell for about $20 here, mine was $15 + $5 postage and handling and apart from some blemishes on the Penny and Halfpenny (You have to look up close to see them), mine is perfectly fine.
They are really common here too, one dealer is selling them in 10s for $200 or so postpaid. Bear in mind our dollar is around 50p.

1986 and 1983 BU sets    Beautiful but both sets have usual flaws, the 1983 has an impaired £1 coin and the spottiness on 10p. The 1986 has a 1p that is entirely ruined by the low quality packaging   Otherwise rest is fine, and these will be "rescued" when I get some more flips. I only bought them as I love shiny coins, British coins and I really wanted the £2 Edinburgh coin. I also got some Pound notes, these are in the bank note threads |
