Lovely coins, zookeeperz!  TNG - this is a set put together by The Royal Mint from coins they've bought on the open market. Usually such sets are a very expensive way to buy coins, but with these coins I imagine that the huge increase in the value of gold since 2000 will have easily exceeded the original selling price. It certainly looks like a gorgeous set! Gold sovereigns were effectively out of normal circulation by World War I - coins issued in the 1920s were basically bullion pieces and are probably more common in Uncirculated than in lower grades, but perhaps by saying 'VF or better' the mint were just covering themselves in the event of complaints. Bear in mind also that a British collector might well assign a VF grade to a coin that a US collector would grade as AU. Edited by NumisRob

Wow TNG - That is beautiful, all those coins and mintmarks.
In a Feb 2001 issue of a coin magazine, they were selling some sovereigns at £55 each for new ones and £56 - 60 for 1910s ones. There is no way anyone would pay £56 for a sovereign now.
My guess is even back then with the Royal Mints, usual price fluffing and inflating that set would have cost around £400 - £500 then and now it likely would cost over £2000.

Well I did get them out as well as a couple other sets for pictures. I am still happy with the condition as I was when I first noted they look uncirculated. I could not bring myself to open the capsules though because I didn't want to mess them up. Here's another set1990 United Kingdom Gold Proof Sovereign Four Coin Collection   Set no. 1539 of 2500 sets According to Ampex though, only 1,721 sets were issued. The mintages are higher for individual coins. Contains 22 kt gold fineness 5 Pound Proof 39.94 grams Double Sovereign Proof 15.98 grams Sovereign Proof 7.98 grams
Half Sovereign Proof 3.99 grams I do believe a gold plated silver medallion dated 1990 is in here. Feels heavy?

Another hiding in there that for the longest time I thought was a proof but it isn't. 1998 United Kingdom Brilliant Uncirculated Five Pounds Coin   No 150 of a maximum mintage limited to 1000 22 kt gold 39.94 grams 36.02 mm diameter. A small circled 'U' to the left of the date means the coin is of BU quality. Queen Elizabeth II's fourth portrait can be seen on the obverse of the coin, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The coin is made of solid 22 carat gold (Gold fineness of 0.916). Originally supplied in a Royal Mint acrylic screw top capsule and presented in a Royal Mint green velvet case, accompanied with an individually numbered certificate of authenticity (COA). Only 1,000 BU gold five pounds pieces were issued by The Royal Mint in 1998. Edited by TNG

The 1997 Britannias are sublime.
Gold is way too rich for my blood, I have to stick to silver sadly.
The shine of a 200 year old halfcrown will dry my tears.

Princetane, NumisRob and jbuck thanks. I have one more Great Britain gold coin. It is rarely seen for sale. It would be the last of them I would part with. Posted it before but might as well re-post here to keep them together. Not the lowest minted by a long shot but seldom seen.
