It's been a little while since I posted a new British acquisition, though I've added well over a dozen in the past week and a half. Here is the latest one to show up in my mailbox. A steal of a deal from ebay at 1/2 of what it should have cost me. Another halfpenny to fill a hole in my Peter Kempson, Coventry - Gates and Buildings collection, I've surpassed the halfway mark of the 63 varieties last month, getting down to some tougher ones to locate in a suitable condition. I only have a 4 or 5 in TPG holders, this is one of them.  "Buy the Book Before You Buy the Coin" - Aaron R. Feldman - "And read it" - Me 2013! Daltonista that sure is a nice looking 3 shillings piece. Looks pretty high grade to me - say about a high end AU in US grading & EF+ in UK grading. I don't think I've even seen this coin before, it's a really neat looking bit of metal, great portrait, do you know who the engraver/designer was?

I'm leaning more toward nEF myself, given the flattening of the laurel leaves, not to mention the eyelids and ear and the hair in between them...but please don't get me started on US vs. UK grading, or TPG's, for that matter. With respect to grading Regency Period tokens, I've pretty much adopted Lily Tomlin's line: "No matter how cynical I become, it's never enough to keep up." To illustrate what I'm talking about, I'll add a pic below of my much more common 1812 18d for comparison.I don't think I've even seen this coin before, it's a really neat looking bit of metal, great portrait, do you know who the engraver/designer was?Lewis Pingo did the honors from his desk at the Soho Mint where he wore many hats, including that of Mint Master for some years before his death in 1830. Somewhat surprised you haven't come across these, as something over £4 million in face value were struck in 1787 (6d and 1/-) and 1811-1816 (18d, 3/- and 5/-). Most were melted upon recall, of course, as a Crown-mandated consequence of the Great Recoinage and the return of regal silver and copper "small change."
