Hello everyone,

Thanks for checking out my first post. I found this coin in a huge lot of wheat cents I purchased about a year ago. I've taken it to a few places and no one can tell me what it is. I've also looked at every book I own and still can't figure it out. The closest thing I've seen are some contract issue coins, otherwise I think it might be something foreign. One side of the coin is completely obliterated. The other side has a wreath design with a "v" in the middle, an oval patern in the middle, and maybe the same wreath with a "v" on the opposite side. Its about the size of a cent. All replies to this post are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Dave

Looks like you dug/found a very early one piece button. You can see were the shank came off in the center of your first image. I have dug hundreds of these in assorted variations. Many have on the back:

Treble Gilt
Extra Plate
or the name of a company.

I would guess the button is from 1820ish - 1850s.

Thanks again. I just emailed a guy who runs a civil war era relic site who confirmed that this was "a flat or plain button used on a civilian garment, probably 19th century."

Amazing! I should have posted this picture a year ago. Thanks!
