Hey,
I bought the following 2 notes UNC which I believe are UNC since they only each have 1 slight bend which I believe is a counting mark. But I was wondering what these were and if they effect grade. They seem to be a smudge or possibly ink smear? look at the photo below:

Thanks,

I know that one of the security features of the '73 $50 was that the ink would leave a smear if you rubbed it against another, let say, apiece of paper. Perhaps these could've come into contact with one?

It can definitely affect the grade. Now, on its own a smudge won't affect it very much. I highly doubt it will make a note drop from UNC to About UNC, but I can see how it can lose at least one point on the Sheldon numerical scale. Instead of being a 66/70 for example, the smudge could make it a 65/70.

I'm not saying that your note is s 66 or a 65 though, I'm just giving an example.

Thanks for the very detailed response :). Now that I have seen many bills in hand I think its impossible to grade from a pic or scan. You see so much more when its in hand.
