Hello all,
I bought this coin (medal?) at an online auction this evening. Please excuse the horrible picture quality as it is from the auction catalogue. I'm hoping that as bad as these pictures are, someone may still be able to identify this piece. I've searched the internet high and low and have drawn a blank. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Looks like a halfpenny to me. Farthings look pretty similar but I'm sure this one is a halfpenny (or 1/24 of a shilling, or 1/480 of a pound).
The size should be 28 mm.

Just looked up in my books, 1860 halfpenny of this type would be a tough thing to find. Which automatically raises the question whether it's a real thing!

Thanks. That's what I was thinking since it's different than any of the half pennys I've seen pictures of. The ones I've seen have different inscriptions and have the date on the reverse under Britannia where the flowers(?) are on this one.

Here's a good site to play around and find stuff about British coins. I directed you to Victorian halfpennies.

Thanks svlav, that's a very interesting site. I've been doing some digging around on some other sites too and have come to the conclusion that my coin is most likely fake because a real one would be very, very valuable.

I won't know one way or the other for a few weeks until it comes in the mail and I can examine it first hand. I'll post some decent pictures then too.

EDIT: Of course if there is even the slightest doubt I'll send it away to be certified

Peter Thomas, thanks for your input. I'm checking groats now too but so far can't find an 1860 that matches on both the obverse and reverse. I'll keep looking though.

That is what looks like a 1860 half penny or penny.
Both are very high value coins.
The pic's look like the typical fuzzy one associated with fakes.
ask for better pics and proof of originality before even bidding on this
Caveat emptor springs to mind
