Th interesting part of this one is that it comes with paperwork from 1849 stating it is worth only melt but 93g of gold is a lot of melt.

I have a coin show tomorrow and hope this is the last fake I see this week.

It's an interesting piece and a lot of gold, but even with the letter it's not worth $9,500. If it turned out to be one on Beckers it would add a little value but still not what the seller wants.

Assuming its real paperwork and real gold hummmmm....Although I have done a lot of business with that seller and is not too far from my house, right here in good old CT.

The letter looks very normal for 1849 both in script style and the wear and tear on the paper as shown in the images. I regret that it no longer has its envelope if it was mailed but I suspect that a business letter of this sort would be worth no more than $10 as it is unless the Sothby connection would make it desirable to the numismatic trade. Where the value comes is the connection between the medallion and the letter. Such items tend to get separated.

Interesting...a big chunk of gold.
The letters could be my handwriting, ie it looks rather modern to me, imo.
Handwriting was much more disciplined before the advent of typewriters.
I could be wrong, but I'm not convinced by the provenance.

Surely, this would a 19th century fantasy piece. A museum should be able to determine the age of the paper by it's type, and the extent of the degradation of it.
Because the percentage of bullion value in this piece, the purity of the gold should be checked. It may be heavily gold plated.
In the first instance, a specific gravity test could be carried out, and if really serious, an X ray florescence test done.
