At the bottom of the queens head (neck line on the obverse) there are the initials LCW.....on the no LCW there are no initials. Hope it helps.

The 1870 noLCW is a coin that if you ever do purchase, I would only buy it from a reputable coin dealer or a TPG example. Over the years there has been some LCW's that became noLCW's buy simply removing the LCW from the neck. A real noLCW in higher grade is also a rare coin.

As for the NO LCW there are 2 tell tale signs.... The Shamrock at the tip of her crown IS NOT present on a true NO LCW and on the regular issue it is.... For some one to remove that + the LCW and leave no trace would have to be fairly skilled...

Always check the crown first

Here's mine, formerly ICCS G6 now PCGS G06. The absence of the shamrock behind the front jewel of the crown is the giveaway, since the initials can wear off easily.

Oh very cool! thanks for the explanation. I sent off a beautiful 1870 50c just last week and had no idea to even look for that. I checked Heritage and found it's a pretty valuble coin. Mine I think will easily make AU55 or perhaps better so what a boon it would be were it a "no L.W.C.!

@rynegold.

That would be AWESOME if it was a no LWC. How long did you send out? I almost NEVER see a no LWC above about VF.
