We'll never know if that was a deliberate political statement of some sort, or just a random act of testing the strength of a blade. When I was in high school -in the previous century!- it was common practice to carry a pocketknife, and the favorite way of testing sharpness was to stab a penny and pin it to the wooden desktop.

At first I was shocked and couldn't help but wonder how and why this happened. However, the more I look at this coin, the more I like it. It's so rare to see that much detail. Putting it all in perspective - hey - every morning when I wake up and look in the mirror I see some lines that also scare me.

Actually, that was my coin. I had it as a youth. It was in pristine condition, until my little sister took some scissors to it after I drew a moustache on her David Cassidy poster.

Coin World values a VF20, which this would easily pull if not for the damage, 10,000 for the vine edge or 12,500 for the lettered edge.

This was an S-9 so it's the vine and bars edge.

If I had the available free cash I would consider it, I don't have an S-9. But frankly I would rather have a lower grade with environmental problems than a deliberately damaged piece.
