I collect coins but go after anything cool and I thought this was way cool. I believe it is an 1850-1860's sutler token for Baker & Moody Hatters in Chicago. The tokens reverse looks like the 10 dollar gold liberty. The token is just under the size of a half dollar. Awesome condition. There were two similar Hatter tokens on ebay and they did very well. Mine looks better. I bought this token plus an 1881S Morgan silver dollar (listed on another thread in this forum), which is around MS61-MS63. I got both pieces for a whopping $64.40. What are your opinions of this token?

I love it! I have a few Chicago tokens myself. I've noticed a lot of beautiful designs came from there. Yours is a very nice example. The combo price seems fair to me. Congrats!

That's a screamer+! I love pieces that incorporate coinage designs (especially the eagle).
The brim of the hat is barely visable on mine, while the bird has shorter wings.
Nice feather detail.

I share your appreciation for these early tokens. This token is from the so-called "Merchant era" being just prior to the Civil War. Collectors often refer to these as "Miller tokens" because a chap by that name wrote a book, listing these, many years ago.

This Miller token is a relatively common one, although the vast majority of coin collectors have probably never seen one before! There are some other hatters that issued similar pieces, during that era.

Here's an ebay listing for one that recently sold for $20:

IMHO, these Miller tokens are underrated and many, more common Civil War tokens tend to outpace them in price.

You say that this is a sutler token, and I believe that this is incorrect. Do you have evidence that supports this?

ExoDude. No offense intended. I call all my friends dude. I was incorrect. She's a Merchant Token. I like mine better than the one in the link. I want to believe it would do 30-40 on ebay. It could have the potential to hit 70+ but I like it too much now to let it go.

I do have a CW period token. I think it's Union Flour or something similar. I do know the Union token I have is very common. I'll post pics later. I saw a very nice example of the Hatter token that was for sale on the Net and graded by NGC MS63 (or 64). The dealer was asking 195 for the Hatter Token. And yes, I realize you can ask for anything you want. Getting what you want it is another problem.

Aside from these two tokens, I have nothing else token related. But that will change. I heard an expression long ago that makes sense:

"Buy what you like and you'll always be happy."
Dealers excluded from this rule.

Hi mds308 ... Considering your interest in tokens, you may want to keep your eyes open for the Rulau token books which are out of print. Look for a 3rd or 4th edition (2004). These are huge volumes, maybe a thousand pages. The 4th edition has been selling in the $40-$50 range, used. One good token find will pay for the book!

If you can get to some coin shows, you should be able to find these circulated, merchant era tokens in the $10-$25 range. Choice, bright UNC's though are fetching $150 and up for the common ones. Happy hunting!

According to an 1855 Chicago City Directory, the partnership consisted of Franklin Baker and Orrin C, Moody.
