Well, technically it is an error, as the dies were not intended to have all that extra metal as part of the design. Unfortunately, due to problems with the plating process so many of the 2001 nickels have that type of error that it's tough to find one without it. Keep your eyes open, though, because once in a while you get one with larger globs of metal which can be quite collectible. And keep in mind that there are 2 main varieties of the 2001 -- the one with a "P" mintmark below the queen's bust and the one without. Hope this helps!
