I ran across a 1966 Lincoln Cent showing Abe smoking a pipe with a couple of smoke rings. It was obviously done post mint. Anyone have a history on this? Was the alteration done recently or years ago?

I moved your topic to the 'Modern US Variety and Error Coins' forum so those who have the answers are more likely to see it.

I'd love to and I'm sure everybody else would love to see your coin. But without PICS, it is impossible to give an opinion.

When I saw this I said to myself, "A pipe!" Sure enough, I was correct.
The history goes back, at the earliest, to the late 60s until the mid 70s. But why someone would do a pipe I do not know.
Additionally, cents with the portrait of Kennedy and the outlines of each of the 50 States were also done.
Not post-mint damage but rather a deliberate marketing ploy.
They enter circulation from time to time, although not as often as in years past.
I found a Kennedy years ago and just last year I gave it to a young lad who was interested in history. I made sure to tell him about the reverence in which Kennedy was held.
But why a pipe I do know know.

Wouldn't it be about the same as cents being stamped with a state shape? I've seen both.

I have seen the coin you speak of before. It is called a Counter Stamp. Some people collect them. You may get a dollar or 2 for it on ebay depending upon the coin and if the right buyer comes across.

I have seen this coin before on this site. You can use the search function and maybe you will find it. Search "counter stamp" and maybe "Lincoln pipe"

There is also a "Post your Counterstamp Thread" and there are many pics posted of alot of different counterstamp that members have found.

Happy hunting

In the 60's , in the back of comic books, Lincoln cents with the pipe and Kennedy counter stamps were advertised along with the likes of X-ray glasses etc. I found my first Lincoln Cent with a Kennedy counter stamp last week in change, ironically.

That is one of the "nicer" or shall I say "newer" counter stamps I have seen. Wonder if it was stamped long ago and someone had kept it or if it was recently stamped.
