My mom gave me this as a gift yesterday, and she told me that she got it from china in 1978. any idea what this is?

It will be for much the same purpose as the coin in graceoutcast's recent post - a good luck charm or amulet.

This coin shows a more traditional way of depicting bats - there are five of them arranged in a circle. Five bats are especially lucky/fortunate, apparently. The large Chinese character surrounded by the bats is "fu", meaning good luck, good fortune and/or happiness.

The tiger is one of the twelve animals of the "Chinese Zodiac".
