I'm not sure if one like this or this one has been posted before but it was an interesting find on the bay. Not sure if it was a love token or not as there appear to be many names on it, I just thought I would share it.

There have been different ones like this posted before. Some are pretty well done where it looks like a modern commode she is sitting on. I guess you can say its the Trade dollar equivalent of the hobo nickel instead of a Love Token

I have seen a lot of these and I HATE them. And I certainly would NOT pay any kind of premium for one. I just find it to be crude and a horrible waste of a great coin. The hobo nickels on the other hand are not bad. Just changing the face.

What in the world is 3> ? I am guessing if the 3 was backwards it would look like a heart but then why not just use the heart icon like this ♥ by pushing shift plus the 3 key on number pad if that's what it is supposed to be? That's why I am asking what it is supposed to be

On a serious note - Bryan that is a superb legendary set you have! What did you spend on it? It looks like it might be worth perhaps 30K or so in today's market. I picked up this same album at Stack's about 7 years ago but didn't take it seriously until now. As you probably know, I am aggressively buying coins (raw) to assemble a similar set with mostly BU and AU coins, with VF being the bare minimum. (The classic head cent is in Fine, and one of the Seated dollars is only VG/F.) I will need to get a part time job to start the gold page :) I commend you on that accomplishment, it is a great thing of beauty and probably a decent store of value. Do you look at it a lot and study the coins? Or perhaps lock it away somewhere? I would like to take some pictures of my set to share it with you and others, but do not know the best way to do that. I think that's part of the fun.

The person is asking way too much money for the coin.

If memory serves me correctly, these were universally hated coins and were supposed to be used outside the country. I think I remember reading that people did not want them and there was a group (immigrants maybe?) who was forced to receive them as wages here. The could not exchange it for a full dollar I believe. The defacing was a form of protest for this hated coin.

With that said, I am going to say FAKE for the listing - why on earth would someone make a love token out of THAT (unless it was to break up with someone!)

True, they were only accepted in payment at their bullion value which fell to less than 50 cents.

This was probably "trench art" from the Spanish American War or WWI.

While the trench art possibility certainly exists, the engraved names do appear to have been done by a skilled hand. If one could connect the names and attach some history to this coin, its value would be enhanced. The asking price strikes me as excessive, and, I'm $200-$300 seems more reasonable. That said, sellers will often fish for a high price when they have an unusual item in their stock.
