A new coin to my collection. A reverse error that I hadn't seen before.

Septimius Severus denarius

Obv:â€"IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, laureate head right
Rev:â€" MONTE (sic) AVG, Moneta standing left, holding scales in right hand, cornucopiae in left
Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194 â€" A.D. 195
Reference:â€" BMCRE -. RIC -. RSC -. This error not noted. cf. BMC 380ff. RIC 411a. RSC 330 .

This unusual error not noted in any of the major references

Septimius-Severus,-Eastern-Cos-II,-Monte-Avg

Most people will see the expected MONET.

Regards,
Martin

So MONTE rather than MONET is the error? (is this a rare error?) ... your coin is very cool!!

However, it is quite sad to think of poor Antonio, the dyslexic coin designer ... I fear that this mistake may have caused him some grief with good ol' Septimius Severus!!

Quote:
Juno Moneta, an epithet of Juno, was the protectress of funds. As such, money in ancient Rome was coined in her temple. The word "moneta" is where we get the words "money", or "monetize"

... I had to go find out what Moneta was about ...

=> very cool coin, maridvnvm!!

Monte is new to me. I assume you have Mone:

Septimius-Severus,-Eastern-Cos-II,-Monte-Avg

I recall early in the game being impressed at how many spelling variations there were on coins of Pescennius Niger but as time has passed we find that Septimius had quite a few as well. One has to wonder how many dies there were?

Doug,
I don't have MONE.. and am certainly on the lookout for one. MONTE was a new one on me and the seller had not noticed the error....

Nice find, interesting error. I wonder how many of these made it into circulation before the mistake was caught?

WRT Black Background.

Doug has a great set of pages on coin photography, including the black background here:-

I have my own variation on the setup after several years of trial and error.

I have tried so many experiments on backgrounds and coin lighting that it confuses me. This page shows the basic idea:
http://www.forumancientcoins.com/do...2011ez3.html

The idea is to create heavy shade on the background which is black to start with so that there is no background texture. You will have to remove the edges of the tube in postprocessing (I use Photoshop Elements 10) unless it is so large that you are likely to get too much light in the tube and on the bottom black piece. It is easier to shade the background and keep the coin far from it on the dowel making the background out of focus and very dark than it is to paint out textures you failed to eliminate.
