Got a call from a guy I know ..he bought a bunch of coins from a guy in Ottawa and when he went through them he found some and knew I loved this type. so I got them for a killer deal ..Face ( silver value ) + 50% ..Now how could I say no.... Anyhow You guys and gals will cringe but I could not bare the thought of keeping it in that ugly holder.. I want to enjoy the beauty and am now looking at it in a solid slab.. AWWWWW the colors are so intense...... I wish I had every year looking this way but alas I take what I can get Edited by artdio 11/07/2012 7:29 pm

I would say the toned coins from that seller are natural, although the contrast on the photos of the 1945 may be juiced a bit. The 1959 dollar posted is definitely Artificially Toned(AT), you can purchase bottles of liquid toner on ebay that will result in that splotchy gold and electric blue-violet toning.

Nice piece Sid, it appears to be authentic toning. I used to own several proof dollars (1971/1972/1973) in those small black Mint cases. they were uncapsulated and took on this type of toning after about 10 years. Also Sid, F.Y.I.: speaking of toning, I've got a 1/2 dozen nice coins (all I.C.C.S.) starting tonight at appr. 7:00 p.m.-ish. In the group there will be a nice 1916, 1/2 dollar with gorgeous toning and a soft gold tint. Scans won't do it justice, however, it's a high grade AU-55, one you may be interested in! Glenn

thanks Glenn as for the toning I took it straight out of the ICCS PL64 slab..Yet certain guys say its fake toning ? I doubt ICCS will grade those would they.. Glenn send me a note with listing # ..I think my 1916 is same or 1 notch up but never hurts to have a few...

AT or not you did the right thing freeing it from the slab.Colourfuly toned coins don't show well through all the layers of ICCS plastic.

I may be wrong but in my opinion that coin is 100% artificial toning.
I'm a little surprised most others don't agree with me.

double.... from what I have seen on ebay the AT always looks like a near perfect circular rainbow pattern.. almost target like.. ..I have several toned beauties and they are all different colors and patterns but not one has that target type effect... I know of a few sellers on ebay that have nothing but that type of coin ok most are US dollars but same thing...

I believe the spotty blue toning could very well be natural (and at the time the rest of the coin was brilliant white) and then it was 'helped' along as proof of the orangy-brown toning.
This orangy-brown toning to me is 95% of the time artificial.

Question......
In regards to ALL toned coins, what is the best method of storing them to retain its current toned state? If they aren't air tight will they continue to tone?

I beleive they do continue to tone .. remember there is air sealed in to any slab unless they are vacuum sealed .. But that's what make's them so wonderful to look at
