Hi

Quick question...Is this doubling on this 50 cent piece or Die Deterioration...?

Die Deterioration (a/k/a die fatigue) would present more of an orange peel effect on the field or would have some of the letters with the effect of merging into the field resulting in less definition than what is customarily anticipated.

I personally feel that in this example we are viewing normal Strike Doubling (a/k/a Machine Doubling) because of the presence of the shelf-like image on the secondary image.

More than likely one of the dies was loose during the striking of the coin. The loose or slightly rotated portion of the die may have caused some of the relief area on the coin to shear off resulting in this shown image which most likely was produced directly as a result of the recessed portion of the die...

IMHO,
