make sure the space between the 19 & 14 looks right, if they are too far apart it's an altered 1944-D

In the mid to higher level grades, yes, there are added mintmarks known. I've never seen a cast but there may be. If in doubt, go TPG'd.

If you are going to buy this raw, you have to be familiar with what the mintmark should look like. I would probably take a look at a Counterfeit Detection guide and look at some certified examples. One benefit to learning to authenticate this coin, is you will also be learning to authenticate the 1916-D dime. Both coins used the same mintmark punch.

vermontensium, Could you take a close-up photo of the VDB on the shoulder of the altered 44-d? I would like to see it if possible. Thank you.

seriously buy a slabbed one and then crack it. Don't buy a raw one

Quote: BTW this will be coin in hand NOT online photo buying or from a Chinese coin shop. Good call. I really want to buy this one raw as well, but my options have become increasingly limited; all of the ones I am finding are already slabbed.
