I spent most of this weekend reading over the candidates views on how the ANA can be improved. Each and every article sounded like any other political sound bite. Examples would include, improve our website, education, internet presence, work on new designs, balance the budget, move into the 21st century.
As an ANA member dealer it sickens me that they have DONE nothing except SELL their name to the highest bidder.
Let me give a few examples.
The ANA website has been updated, and I have yet to hear anyone other than the ANA say anything good about it. It is very hard to navigate, has so many listing errors, and took months to get up and running.
Work on new designs? Does anyone believe this?
Education. They talk about offering services to the Boy Scouts, church groups, schools, coin clubs, and so on. Well ask the next 50 people you meet if they have ever heard of the ANA.
Up the membership to 40,000 How many members come and go within the first year? What is the actual number of members these days? For the most part, members get out what they put in, but the ANA has shown NO desire to boost their numbers. As a perfect example, how many of you have attended an ANA convention? Anyone ever receive a thank you note after the show? A post card? Anything?
Balance the budget? I will leave this one alone. Sounds like every political speech I have ever heard in my life.
Move into the 21st century. Here is another typical topic heard in every political speech. Let us welcome each and every person, let us welcome the children as they are our future, let us embrace each other and move into tomorrow.
We here on the forum have discussed just how well the ANA has embraced everyone, children, and tomorrow. They have not embraced yesterday or today, so why would anyone expect them to embrace tomorrow.

So what does all this mean?
The ANA is supposed to be the "voice" of the hobby.
Recommendations.
Stop selling your name. Your word means nothing if it is for sale.
Stop bowing down Large dealers and grading companies make their own rules. Create and enforce grading standards.
Enforce your own rules. The guidelines mean nothing if they are only enforced on the small.
Be a leader. It is time for the ANA to step up and show the world what this hobby can be. Create real education programs. Offering classes at the 2 conventions is all fine and dandy for the few thousand that show up. We need to reach out to the 100 million collectors, not just the 30 some thousand ANA members.
Get the ANA out of ebay. This would also fall under selling your name, but it is a fact that ebay allows sellers to sell garbage day in and day out. How can anyone respect the ANA if they continue to tolerate this activity?
Put some teeth in your enforcement. The ANA has rules. Sometimes they are enforced, but what are the results? You kick out some dealer. Obviously they are not bothered by this, the sales are not bothered, the magazines are not bothered, so what good are the rules?
What are the benefits? There should be clear benefits to being an ANA member. So far, that boils down to the library. The ANA should focus on creating NEW and BETTER referrence material. Make this available FREE to all members either online or in actual print. Most of the referrence material today uses the poorest photos and details. If you need to see what good pictures are, please look to any Bowers and Merena auction catalog.
The ANA should make their presence known to all collectors worldwide. Create an online library that includes material for ALL coins and currency.
While the museum and library are fine for the few who use it, there has to be an easier way. Creating an online presence is far cheaper than maintaining the actual facility. Stop wasting our money (dues) on hiring people who are out of touch with the hobby. Stop wasting our time with promises back by nothing.
If you really wish to be the future, you have to start today!

Come on National dealer, tell us what you really think! LOL
Sounds to me like the same problems with a lot of organisations around the world, they are in the business of protecting their jobs, and that means cow-towing to the big money and doing nothing.
As it's an election, it's up to some of the members of ANA to become good canidates.

Well ND I must say "well put" and those reasons are exactly why I shy away from most organizations. In the end it is all about MONEY and I am not referring to coin collecting! Most local organizations I have tried to affiliate with through the years, in one way or another, wanted money or wanted me to help raise money. Nothing more and nothing less!
My private little ambitions, for the last couple of years, is to start a numismatic society at one of our high schools and hopefully involve all 3 in the county within a couple of years. The only reason I haven't acted is that I know what I want and how I want to do the program which would benefit the students involved very much and I am not sure the school system would give me the free reign that I desire to make this organization very very attractive to the students and the community, not to mention their parents! Will have to make up my mind soon as I do want to start by this fall if possible and see where it goes!

I have tried many times to get schools involved in coins, and it is difficult to say the least. Other organizations like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Boys and Girls clubs, YMCA, and the list goes on and on also have issues that make partnering with them difficult. I have begun creating the new idea (CoinFest) out of this frustration. It is still hard trying to get other people (companies) to help.
When I have met with company officials, their first thought is "what is in it for me". They have not realized the simple fact that giving something back to a community is reward in and of itself. That there are people who appreciate the fact and will support those who do.

I really hate getting up on the soapbox, but I truly love this hobby, and I want to make it a better place for not only myself but for future generations. Within each area of life, there are issues and it seems as if most ignore the problem or try to blame someone else for it. There are really very few who want to make it better.

Hi ND,
I really like it when you get on your soapbox about numismatics. You're expressing some of my frustration at the ANA that I felt wasn't fair for me to express. But here it is- I joined the ANA at the end of March-signed up online. I haven't received a single thing from the ANA- not a confirmatory letter, nada. Did get an email receipt on joining, with passcode (I think-I'd have to search).
As a member of numerous nonprofit organization similar to the ANA, I've got to say that so far, this organization does the least with it's members money.
Some contrasts- as a runner, although no longer active, I joined USA Track and field (it was required for a race I usually run although no longer required). You were automatically enrolled in your local chapter-in my case the Pacific division. They have an easy to access website with a calendar, names and news. Snail mail newslatter came right away, along with the magazine.
Even better, AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) is outstanding. They offer many services, and more importantly INFORM the membership of their services. They have a great webpage and update it daily- post aviation news, lobby for GA, educate members on airspace changes (I wonder if that clueless pilot that wandered into the DC restricted airspace is an AOPA member). AOPA put an ad in USA today out after that airspace incursion saying essentially- one clueless wonder doesn't represent the more than half million GA pilots who take care in flight planning. And Phil Boyer, AOPA head, answered reporters question about airspace, the aircraft involved, etc for the press. Has the head of the ANA done the same regarding "coingate"? If he has I'm not aware fo it- which is part of the problem. AOPA has a phone number for members to call with questions- and they actually research the answers.
ANA needs to get off its tail and advocate for numismatics!

PS would appreciate input as to your take on folks running for ANA offices.
Don

Well, I just went to log in to the website and got a message that my "account has been disabled. Contact the system administrator." If there is a problem, I am unaware of it and certainly I haven't received anything from the ANA informing me of any problem.

What a lousy way to do business!!

Their website was highly touted for the year or two it was in the works but it is not very good, in my opinion. It is actually less than what it was. The online educational displays are even gone. The old site was outdated and hard to navigate but it had more stuff up there. I don't even think they put up press releases any more and they were quite a ways behind in their Numismatist magazine postings. And, in this day and age, why do they not have a forum?

Several years ago, I asked about having all the old Numismatist magazines sold in CDRom format and was told it was in the works, etc. Still haven't seen them put out issue one. A private collector has managed to put a number of the old ones on CD (I assume the issues that were in teh public domain by now). It is sad when just a regualr colletor can trump a whole organization.

I think a bit of youth and vigor and technology is missing from the board in general. Of course, it would be tough for many (younger) people to be able to afford to serve on the board, I would imagine. And, it is a bit difficult to even get someone new on a ballot. So, we pretty much get the same old same old.

Got the ballot in the mail today. It is the only item I've received other than the email with my password. No magazine yet-it has been about two months since I paid my membership fee online.

You raised a point that I forgot all about ND---selling their name. I have a question about this. Since I don't do slabs, is it cheaper to use an ANA membership and NCG grading. Is it cheaper to do it that way than using P.C.G.S and if it's not, well, what's in it for us?

I don't believe the ANA should be enforcing anything. They are an educational institute and so they should be teaching and not playing Jim Dandy to the Rescue.

"...I was riding on a submarine
Got a message from my mermaid queen.
She was hanging on a fishing line.
Mr. Dandy didn't waste no time!
Jim Dandy to the rescue!
Go, Jim Dandy! Go, Jim Dandy!..."

The ANA membership offers the member to directly submit to NGC, but does not offer any discounts.
As far as enforcing rules, that is what the ANA wants to do. It would be fine if they would do it equally. A perfect example are their conventions. According to the bourse contract, dealers are required to operate their tables unitl close of business Sunday. Well all shows are like a ghost town on Sunday. At of 400 or 500 dealers scheduled, there may be 50 to 60 on Sunday afternoon. The ANA has "fines" in place for dealers who leave early, but it seems as if this only applies to the smallest of dealers.

ND, do you have any recommendations as to who we should vote for? I have not read their bios or statements yet, but your perspective might help toward making an informed vote.

I haven't even received my ballot yet. Though I did get an email with a sign-on and password. That got me as far as the "Members Only" page. Once I clicked on "continue" it logged me out. I am seriously considering letting my membership with them lapse.

Check out the official site. http://money.org/Content/Navigation.../default.htm

It would not really be appropriate for me to make public recommendations.

I figured you would say that, but thought I would take a shot anyway. I will vote based on the bios and whatever other info I can find readily in public forums.

However, can you answer this: given what you know about the candidates, do you think it makes any difference who we vote for anyway?

You would not believe the amount of email that I receive whenever I say what many believe to be "too much".

Do I think that it will make a difference? Unfortunately, I do not. While I do believe that all of them have the best intentions, they lack the authority to make real changes. It would appear that most people are trying to please too many others instead of getting the job done.
