The beauty of tones coins is in the eyes of the beholder ,, contrary to popular belief toning in most cases is not damage,, the colors which come onto a toned coin enhance the uniqueness of the coin ,,this is where the added value comes from ,,it does not change the grade.
the strike, details, and handling of the coin do not change,,
there are examples of toned coins which have been cleaned ,,I have several Merc's which were polished and placed into a display back in the 60's they have since toned some very vibrant colors ,but they remain cleaned Merc's with little or no value numismatically ,but to look at they are pretty thats about it .I picked up the display at a yard sale 12 merc's dating back to 1919 for five bucks .I replaced the Merc's in the display with other coins and it hangs on my wall now .
