I can't make out the date on this 10 agorot.

Israel--10-Agorot-With-Strange-Date

Detail

Israel--10-Agorot-With-Strange-Date

It seems to say 1946 and that's impossible as their (modern) coins start in 1948.

So what date is this and why, please ?

The number is "720"; Jewish year 5720 equates to AD 1960, which was the first year of issue of this type.

Sap,
Thanks.
The significance of not using a letter for zero had not occurred to me.
