The letters look more like numbers to me. Die clash with a different denomination obverse? A Flying Eagle cent is 1.1 millimeters wider, and a clash might put the date on the rim of a dime, but doesn't look to be the right digits. Looking at the upper serifs on the "I's" where the E in LIBERTY should be, they look to be below the level of the B, making me think what after we're seeing is less likely an altered E, the top bar of which should be level with the B. Don't know if this helps, but...

Every little bit helps. Thank you. I had not considered that, what I thought were letters on the rim, could be numbers.

I've been looking at this for a long time, and have no clue whatsoever.
Large Date. It looks like Fortin-101 - note what seems to be a die line connecting the DI of DIME - but I can't find anything on Gerry Fortin's site regarding the anomalies. Although the reverse feature *could* be explained away as a counterstamp, I got nuthin' for LIBERTY.
Probably ought to ping Gerry about it.

I'm going to need to send this to someone, probably CONECA. I think I let my membership lapse, though.

I'm in NJ until Monday and then I need to come back here on Thursday (11/29). I won't be able to do anything with this until I get back on Monday, December 3.

I don't know what to say about the E but I suspect the letters/numbers on the rim are post mint damage. The rims are the highest part of the coin and thus the deepest recessed area on and the die. Not the area a die clash is going to reach without severely damaging the rest of the die face. Secondly the rim on this coin is fairly heavily worn yet the figures show pretty clearly.

Yeah, I'm thinking counterstamp for the rim - that's either a backwards date of a configuration I don't recognize from any mintage, or lower-case lettering.
The E, though....
