Here is another coin I acquired recently, which arrived in yesterday's mail. I'm very pleased with it, and I only paid a miserly sawbuck plus shipping

Carinus AE Tetradrachm, Milne 4679, stuck at Alexandria, Egypt, 283 AD

Carinus-Tet

OBV: A K M A KA-PINOC CEB, laureate & cuirassed bust right
REV: LA (year 1) above eagle standing facing between two vexilla, head right with wreath in its beak
9.3g, 20mm

I love the reverse! The fact that it is Year One is awesome! I see you posted it as AE, are these not billon? At this point in history had all the silver been reduced out these coins, or is it too minute an amount to qualify? Needless to say I assume a SAWBUCK is a miniscule amount of money, you did well. Over 9 grams! Kudos to you!

Sorry. I thought "sawbuck" was commonly understood. It was a term used for $10 back when the US ten dollar bill had the Roman numeral X prominently displayed. I know I will get the customary ribbing, but I'm not old enough to remember those bills. I do remember my father using the term though.

There is no silver in this coin and I'm fairly certain there never was.

A little correction. The obverse says:

A K M A KAPINOCK not A K M A KAPINOC CEB.

So this tetra belongs to his 1th year as a Ceasar not as a Augustus

Emmett 4005.

Eddop: If the of obverse legend reads "A K M A KAPINOC K" as you suggest, there appears to be another letter following the last "K". Any ideas?

Now that I know what a 'sawbuck' is, well done JW, er I mean Bing

I've tried and failed many times to get to grips with these provincial legends and unfortunately my brain will just not play ball, guess I'm a bit character dyslectic.

If it is indeed Numerian I guess its an even better deal.

I collected the Alexandrian Tets of Probus for a while and amassed almost 40 of them. Paying $10 for this coin is a real steal and I would expect a dealer price to be almost 10 times that. It does seem to be a double die match to the coin shown by Doucet above. That coin is mis-described by the seller as A K MA NOVM-EPIANOC CEB because the obverse legend is unclear towards the end.

Good deal indeed.

I'm guessing as with the non-provincial ants the prices of Carus and his sons Alex tets double, treble and even quadruple the prices seen for the likes of Probus and say Aurelian?

Am I also right in thinking die matches would be rare finds for these Alex tets?

Shame on me, I just noticed the last letters and not the full legend, Martin thank's for that.
So this is Emmett 4018 , A K M A NOVMEPIANOC K C. ( LA, first year )
A year later Numerian became Augustus ( LB )

Carinus-Tet

Same coin LA but with a star

Carinus-Tet

LB second year as augustus

I don't see a star on the coin in the OP. Does this make a difference? I am away from my references so cannot check.
