Sad, reminds me of stories I have heard about " shaving a little" off the the edges before passing it off on to the next person. If I remember correctly there was a reeded edge on this quarter eagle.

Yes, it is very unfortunate, but I'm sure the guy was definitelty more concerned about making a nice piece of jewelry, not w/ collecting coins... Probably didn't realize that damaging it ruined the value

Over paying is NOT my middle name. Sometimes it's my nickname (oops). The ring was probably made when gold was around 175 dollars an ounce. I'm sure there was little notice made to the coins numismatic value which was way under the 175 spot price. The coin was probably worth less than 60 dollars at that time. The only thing that mattered was pleasing the customer.

Ouch, One of my favorite looking coins I've never had the chance to own. Makes some one who loves the design of the coin cringe

Still better than a holed Liberty Head Double Eagle, and I've seen a couple of those.
