I got an ancient coin that I have found 8 years ago. The coins seems to be Greek and really old so I would like to know: 1)How can I find out if the coin is fake or real? 2)How old is the coin? 3)To whom the picture belonged to? *** Edited by Staff to add images to post. ***

to the community Nice looking coin. Your pictures are a little blurry but your coin appears to be a Roman Provincial tetradrachm of the emperor Caracalla 197-217 AD.

Additional information, this coin is from Phoenicia, Akko-Ptolmais, Reference # Prieur 1223. A similar one to yours in about the same condition sold for $400 in June of 2005.

I'm just curious here--but how would a hammer-struck coin have a raised border perfectly centered around the edges on both sides?

I guess there is a possibility that the coin is a fake. But IMO it looks genuine, with a very good strike.

Is it silver plated It vaguely look as if we can see an underlying metal near the edge. Could just be the pics (or me )... You could take a pic of the edge ?

I noticed that too, I thought it was just the picture. A picture of the edge would tell for sure.

From what I see of the edge, and the dark line running through the middle, my bet is on a cast copy.

That certainly looks like a casting seam. I concur with a cast copy. Martin

I also see a casting line, I agree it's a reproduction. Too bad if it was real it would have been a nice coin.
