Hello all: this is my first post (not sure if I'm doing it correctly). My husband recently inherited some coins. One set is 45+ 1966 Canadian silver dollars - they look so beautiful - I would like to take pictures of them - send them to someone and ask if they have any value other than silver content. MY QUESTION: how do you all take such wonderful pics? I tried with my regular camera and "not so good" .. does anyone have recommendations on the type of camera? Is there a special trick to taking clear photos? Do you have to buy a camera specific to taking coin photos? wow... lots of questions ... any direction would be greatly appreciated.

I just use a kodak easyshare for my photos. They're not perfect, but I haven't explored it's potential yet. I don't recommend using a flash though, I use two lamps with 40 watt Reveal bulbs. Also using a tri-pod to stable the image helps. Other than that, it's mainly settings on the camera and distance from the coin your photographing. If you have a camera with different settings you can use, I would tell what kind of camera and someone will walk you through the steps.

to CCF. If you have a digital camera you should be able to post decent pics here on CCF. Set your camera so there is no flash and set it to macro (little flower icon). I like the results I get taking the pic outside in the sunshine. Practice a bit and it will be OK.

I use an el-cheapo 8 megapixel Nikon "coolpix" digital camera and get good results. There are two "secrets." The first is to make sure your camera has a "macro" setting for taking close-up pictures (on my camera it took me awhile to figure out that you also have to zoom in with the macro feature enabled). The second is to use lots of light (NOT the camera's flash). I nice strong overhead light will work.
