I have this nice Victorian 1879 silver shilling which I grade as ef condition.
In my Spinks 2012 Coins of England & the Uunited Kingdom Book it has 6 different values and I wonder if anyone can help me with this.
These are the values and ref numbers.

3906 Shilling Type A5. Third head. I.R. Similar to die number above date die axis (1 arrow points up, 1 points down)
F VF EF UNC
1879...........................225 500 1150 2000
1979 Proof, milled edge, FDC £3,200

3906A Shilling Type A6. Third head. I.R. Similar to die number above date die axis (1 arrow points up, 1 points down)
1879 uncertain to exist as normal coin or proof?

3907 Shilling Type A7. Fourth head. I.R. Similar to die number above date die axis (1 arrow points up, 1 points down)
1879 ...............................12 25 165 375
1879 Proof FDC £3250

3907A Shilling Type A7. Third head. R. Similar to die number above date die axis (1 arrow points up, 1 points down)
1879.................................15 40 190 350

As I am still fairly new to numismatism I would be gratefull for any help on explaining some of this and the value of my coin.
Many thanks.

Have you got ESC or Davies?I would need to check these later.
However you are seriously overgrading.
Maybe GF to NVF at best. There are also clear hairline visible on the obverse.

Looks like I have to have a rethink about grading then.
I can't see ESC or Davies in the book.

Spink base their prices on UK grading which is much stricter than the US.
ESC stands for English silver coinage
Davies book covers from 1816
Watch out for a new publication.....
The standard guide to grading British coins by Derek Allen is a must.

I wouldn't worry too much about OVERGRADING your coins Sheencrofter, I doubt if anyone in this forum's not guilty of that at some stage, I thing it's a tendency of HOPE on the most part, we all like to think we have better than we actually do, I think is our way of justifying the price we paid, then when we get the actual coin in our hand we can't or wont admit we got it wrong and paid over the odds for it.....!!

"I wouldn't worry too much about OVERGRADING your coins Sheencrofter"

i would and I would recommend sheencrofter tries to learn something about grading so that if he has bought a coin overpriced, without worrying about overgrading he will quickly make the same mistake again.

this particular coin books as a guide at £25 vf and £165 ef, an expensive mistake to make.....yes we all have been there when we started out, but better to help others where we can to not make the same mistake.

Sheencrofter thers a very good book to help collectors have a better idea of grading, its called
"the standard guide to grading British coins", its available at http://www.predecimal.com for £11-99. may be money well spent if it helps you with future purchases.

I'll second that, Ski. None of the price references are any use UNLESS you have Derek's grading book, I'd say.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I'm sure I'd have a lot less knowledge if I hadn't found this forum when I did.
Fortunately I bought this coin in a deal I did with a dealer as a job lot and it stands me in at about £8. So no problems there.
