Hello, I was admiring some of my toned silver coins and noticed that there seems to be a difference in color between 1960 and 1964 silver coins. The coins of 1960 tend to tone a dark purple, where as the coins from 1964 tend to tone a golden-brownish colour.

I have no idea why this is happening. Can one of you Gents enlighten me?

Thanks,

Years don't matter when it comes to toning....Environment does.....temperature, humidity, light, container etc.....people use different methods to try and produce various colors and schemes and usually takes awhile, unless artificial means are used. Silver coins can tarnish and tone in an array of colors some gorgeous others repulsive. Reminds me of one thing that I have noticed is with ike proof dollars that come in the brown boxes. '71, '72, '73, usually are haze free and pretty nice, however I think they might have changed the chemical composition in '74 because almost everyone I have seen (thousands) tend to be incredibly hazy.

These are not the only coins I have from 1960 and 1964. I have noticed a correlation between tone colour and dates on Canadian silver coins, specifically between the years 1960 and 1964. I really don't think this is random. I wonder if it has something to do with the content of the metal.

Yes that could be also, different variations in the metal used to make the planchets and if stored in the same way would probably produce the same results in the years....imo
