I've searched over 40 bank boxes of halves (all rolls wrapped by String) without finding even one silver and I'm starting to get discouraged and burned out.

The questions:
1. Does anybody know if String does a metal composition sort (like a Ryedale machine) of the halves that they process, weed out and keep the silvers?
2. Is there any approximate # of silvers that's a reasonable hoped-for return ratio for every one (or ten) bank box(es) searched - over the long haul?
3. Is a 40-box skunk run to be expected in half hunting?

Any and all answers/advice/ideas appreciated. Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure if I'm entirely qualified to answer this but I'll give it my opinion anyways.

As for String & Sons separating silver. It's very possible. On a large scale it makes sense. I think I read someplace, possibly here, that there is a person buying pennies from one of the Armored Car Companies in large quantity. He is taking them to a warehouse and sorting out the copper. If someone is doing it for copper, I would think someone is doing it for silver.

I dumped $987 in halves today at my CU coin machine today. While one of the tellers was changing the full bags for empty ones, he told me that a customer was having trouble getting the coin machine to take his half dollar. The customer asked the teller if he would just buy it off him and save the customer the trouble of waiting in line to cash it in. Yep, it was silver.

I tend to change up where I get my halves. If I'm having a run of bad luck at one bank, I'll start ordering at another bank. I have gone about 10 to 15 boxes without finding anything. That's the longest. If you have another town close by that has another branch of your bank, try them. Maybe they get their coin from a different warehouse?

I think I average about 1 to 2 silvers per $1000 searched. I haven't kept track. I'm not sure I really want to know. If I found it was really low I might have second thought about searching halves.

String and son dosent actually roll the coins, do a quick google of them and you will see they are just a supply company. They usually work out well for hunters because they usually come from a banks cash room, not from a bigger sorting operation such as Brinks, Loomis, etc.

As for a streak of 40 skunks, you need a new supplier. Those Odds are horrible I would guess you are in a major metropolitan area (also gives you lower odds as turnover is quicker, hence more likely to be culled out). My worst streak is ~10 boxes in a row when that happened I moved on to a diffrent supplier. Recently when I was searching I was averaging ~20-30 silvers per 10-15 boxes, at which point I stopped, couldnt justify the time/gas and harassment from tellers. Now I just do a box every now and then for fun, but trying to make a profit off volume cant really be done anymore IMO. With forums like this (and google/youtube) the explosion of silver price/popularity finds tanked (the secret got out).

Hope this helps but no a 40 box streak sucks and isn't normal even at this time IMO

Thanks for your inputs.

It's funny that you found 2 silvers per box not worth bothering with. After what I've gone through, I'd consider that to be stellar and I wouldn't stop until they started hitting me with a per box bank fee.

Almost all the banks in my area get their coin from one major commercial bank, so I it's looking like half hunting is a lost cause for me.

1. There have been rumors of silver culling by rollers/distributers, but in the last 5 years, no one has provided any proof.

2. No. It's entirely random, but I estimate 1 40% silver per box.

3. Not unusual, but entirely possible, as I believe you are searching the same coin over and over.

Does anyone ever notice the numbers on the s& s boxes.
That some boxes are always skunks and others have a good
Amount of silver.

To an extent, it doesn't matter where you get the halves from if you can push through enough and are dumping them into a separate supply chain. IE; most of my banks are garda supplied. I try to dump into Brinks to prevent cross-contamination. Despite my efforts, some cross-contamination does happen... but what can ya do except keep on grinding?

After 40 boxes, I'd push through another 40 or so. From what I've heard, a pallet of halves is 80 boxes (2,000 lbs) so maybe if you can get to a new pallet, you'll have better luck. I've just started ordering from Loomis... I've heard they suck, but I'm gonna try to clear 10-20 boxes a week and see if I can't cut through the dirt on top to maybe find some goodies underneath, so to speak.

Loomis supplies coin to the one major commercial bank in my area and just about all the other banks get their coin from that one bank. The few that don't probably deal directly with Loomis. It's the Loomis pool of halves that I've been getting continuously skunked in. Regrettably, that pool is the only act in town and I don't have any alternatives where I live.

I suspect there's a limited and stagnant pool of halves in my area. No outgo and no inflow - just a stagnant pool that's already been CRH'd dry of silver.

You've helped me think of something, though - my son lives 4 states away and will be visiting here soon. I think I'll send him $2K and have him bring up 4 boxes of halves from where he lives. His halves can't be any dryer than the local ones here that I've been seeing again and again...

Increase your bankroll, up your orders, and start moving your coin out of the district. Depending on where you live, 120 miles should get it out and should get you fresh supplies. Once I scale up to the realm of big hunters, I'll be dumping all my coin in central PA (Harrisburg?) and Central/Northish Jersey, far away from the greater Philly area supply chain.

You've probably got a viable game plan there, but the total effort, distances and expenses are a deterrent. As a leisure time-overloaded retiree I can just do my old thing as a 15-20hr/wk consultant for 4 or 6 months and use the income to buy the bullion I intend to accumulate. Don't really want to get back in the saddle, but it'd be infinitely easier and more productive than an endless stream of skunk boxes. Not to mention less frustrating, too...

Thanks for the idea, though. I wish I was traveling significant distances regularly and could just fit the coin-moving plan into my regular moves without any additional travel or expense.

I'm one of those people that believes that some boxes/rolls/bags are culled. As for proof, there really is no way to prove it under the circumstances that I believe they are being searched. I have a situation with dimes that I've posted about and I plan to post a follow-up on the dime search thread soon.

As for your situation, as others have mentioned, S&S is just a wrapper and used by many banks, and even the fed.

As for your run of bad luck, I would advise you to change banks. You have have no good reason to continue. BUT, you never know what the real reason for luck or bad luck. If you are returning your coin to the same place you buy, fistfulladirt probably nailed it. I don't dump where I pick up. I once found a box with 303 silvers. At that same bank, same branch, I went on a streak of boxes with NO SILVER that is similar to yours. You never know when you are following someone else dump. You could be in the middle of a mega sorter's dump of 50 boxes and you are reaping the negative rewards. You could be getting coin from a bank who allows their security guys to go through all the halves before they re-roll them. There are many reasons for your current run of luck. That may change on the next box or you may get 40 more boxes with no silver.

Good Luck,

OO

its luck of the draw mainly, I've had a 19 box streak of nothing, so I know what you mean when finding 2 40s gets you excited I feel the same way. it does seem like you are getting the same coins back, so yea if you can try a different if you can. theres never been any proof of armored car services removing silver ( maybe in area 51 perhaps)
