If it was a modern coin, my first guess would be struck-through grease. There is a faint glimmer of where possibly a 5 was located, so maybe it was worn away.

edit - corrected spelling

I'm thinking probably a filled die. I've seen a few coins from this period that have the same type of error -- I myself have a GV penny with a missing T. There also doesn't seem to be any marks caused by some sort of a tool removing the 5.

Could be plugged die.But PMD more likely as the tip of the leaf is also missing.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Canadian Beaver Hunter

Now that I look at it, there could have been a chisel taken to the surface...The yellow lines are indicative of what a chisel would do, slanting gouge and the arrows show what might be the edges that a chisel would leave...

But, just my opinion.

Maybe so. If so, it looks like it was done some time ago -- note how there is circulation wear continued over the place where the 5 and leaf tip were. I suppose that could be faked but it looks good. And what would the premium be on this missing digit coin if it were an authentic error? Enough to spend the time to purposefully produce it?

Yeah looks like it used to be a 5 until someone needed somewhere to vent their frustrations.
