1800 loonies , this way you wouldn't have lost any money ( except for inflation lol ).

P.S. - I look at coin collecting as a hobby - never an investment .

Coins are NOT an investment. Neither is Gold bullion. Gold bullion is an insurance of a kind. Coins are a hobby that a few who REALLY know what they are doing MIGHT make a profit on a very long term basis. If it was me spending the 17-18 in this case mark me down for a couple of really nice 1945 silver dollars........... way better potential than a 48 dollar in my world.

It probably depends on how large your hoard is! If you are happy with your hoard (insurance) and one ounce of gold wouldn't really make much difference anymore, then buy the silver dollar. :)

Since Dollars and bullion are the only choices,I'll agree with 54dollarcoin,but I'D take one '45 and one '47ML.

Out of the two I would say Gold Maple.
Some other Canadian coins that I would invest in include:
1. Glow in dark Dinosaur
2. $20 Bumble Bee
3. Silver Maples

In today's economic environment I would confidently say Gold is BOTH insurance and an investment (maybe one of the best investments today!).

I would go for a recognized but scarce variety coin. Think 1965 5c large beads or whatever your area of interest is.
