Hey,
I had just purchased a lot of UNC 50c Rolls which I thought were BU. Looking a some of the rolls I have noticed some wear (dumb of me to leave feedback before checking everything). Well after that I was kinda bummed and checked CaC for what varieties were ava. for the 50c I had bought. After checking the 74/78 and found nothing I started checking the 82's. At first they all looked the same until I checked the hair. There it was the Small Beads variety. After looking though all 20 coins it seems 8 of them are Small Bead... not bad (this was one of the rolls that look BU). Please check the images below to verify.

Congratulations, that is truly a great find.
It sure is nice to see them side by side.

I am NOT an expert on these.
To my eye it looks as if these coins have been derived from different master dies.
I need some educating.
Could someone provide a bit more information on the obverse dies for these?

Yes they are from different master dies.Sometime in '82 it was decided to lower the relief of the portrait and re-engrave it with more detail.Similar to the situation in '53 where the original portrait's SF detail did not strike very well. The low relief(small beads) portrait continued 'til '89.

Thanks for the information DBM... Did this happen in late 82? I'm guessing based on the price its the most rare of the Nickel 50c pieces.

Same thing happened for the 1982 nickel dollar. Easiest way to differentiate them to me is the first jewel on the right of the tiara, consisting of two superposed beads. If the beads are of equal size, it's the common version, if the top bead is larger than the other one, it's the scarcer one. It is harder to find on the 50 cents than on the nickel dollar. 8, that's a nice number, I've only found 1 so far.

1980 25ยข Far Beads and Near Beads also have portrait differences, not mentioned in Charlton`s,which make them easy to differentiate.
A change in obverse beads or denticles always goes hand in hand with a change in portrait.

The two varieties of the 1982 fifty cents are a bit of a mystery. Back in the day I used to acquire new coins from the Bank of Nova Scotia for puting together new years sets to sell to tourists. In the early summer of that year I was able to acquire a full bag of halves (1982) and was surprised that the split was pretty much 50 -50 with a planchet blank and a clipped planchet in the mix. I for one think that the so called rarer variety is a lot more common than most collectors realize. They are also virtually impossible to sell at any level.

I don't think that's the case, there is always a buyer just needs to the right price. I'm sure you could get $60 a coin fairly easily on ebay. Now if your asking for $250 for a MS65 that's another story.

Sometimes I get impatient and buy hastily. I bought a small beads for $25.00 from Phil's bills back in April.

Actually, only the MS-65 and MS-66 grades seem to sell. It is impossible to sell one graded MS-64, unless you deeply discount it...

I prefer to sell raw BU coins... Let the buyer decide on the grade, I usually sell most coins at a MS62-63 price.

I even found one of these SB 1982 at a bank for face value back in spring 2012! (And I'm not a high-volume searcher of 50c, either! I've only looked at a couple hundred nickel 50c in my life!)
