Hi there,

I recently found this coin amongst some secondhand things we bought. I'm wondering if anyone could help me to determine what it is? I've tried to do a bit of research but have yet to find anything like it. I'm wondering if it is an ancient coin or a fantasy coin? Any help would be much appreciated. Thankyou

Sadly this isn't a real coin.

Hello and welcome.

But yes, sadly, this is a very typical "tourist copy" of an ancient coin, that you're likely to find in the street markets of places like Greece, Turkey or Syria. The design is loosely based on the coinage of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great.

So, it's a cast copy, but of what?

Thanks very much for the help. :) I had a feeling it was a fake, but just wanted to be sure. (Thankfully I didn't pay anything for it). :)

I'm thinking it's a "two-tailed" coin, showing the reverses of two different silver tetradrachms of Philip. The top pic, at least, is the standard layout for several tetradrachm types. The horse going the other way is less common but can be seen on some coins, like this one.
