Hello all, I'm new to this site and would like to find out about this coin I dug from my garden, its half faded and appears to be in Latin. Any info and the value would be helpful as I'm into collecting more ww1 and ww2 militaria so its not really my collection area. Thank you all, Daniel Edited by danielw12 11/23/2012 11:26 am

In order to help you, it would be useful to have a picture of the other side plus an idea of the weight and diameter of your coin. And, to CCF. Someone here will almost certainly be able to help you.

Lovely piece - how did you come about finding it? The head is of William III and says GVLIELMVS III DEI GRA (William the Third, by the grace of God). Dates around 1695 onwards, but in such a good condition you may be able to get an exact date (very top of the front split in two by the design). Front is: Crowned shields with arms, Lion of Nassau in center date ·MAG BR·FRA· ET·HIB· REX My advice is to not try to clean it any further - a better picture may be able to tell its composition, but this appears to be a shilling, making it silver. I may be wrong - it currently looks copper. Again, dont try and buff it to a shine - you'll devalue it massively. Heres a link to what I think it is: http://www.treasurerealm.com/coinpa...s/S3501.htmlFor a grade and value, a better picture of both sides in good lighitng would be necessary.

Hello, thanks for the info, I think it is that coin or one very similar, I found it in my back garden about 1 1/2 maybe 2 foot in the mud. I put it in a cup of water to let it clean up and this is its current condition. I will upload photos of me standing under a light to try get better detail.

Some new photos under the light, its dark here so natrual daylight cannot be done. Also thanks, I live in South Hertfordshire and I think before homes had been built in this land it was a farm that covered many miles. So I guess there is many interesting digs to be found in this area.

That is an amazing garden find! Looks like a William III halfcrown(judging from the size of your fingers).I live very close to you in Enfield and in my years of detecting the local area I've never found anything that nice! Lucky you!

Thanks... Your right maybe 15 mins away in the car, I dont dig at all, its just by chance I found it along with some sort or jugs from around 1900. As I've said coins are not really my interest I just wanted to find out about this coin and its value. I have large hands lol. So this is a halfcrown or a shilling?
