Hi I am new here. I live over in the U.S. I am asking this question for my sister. She has a set of coins that my father gave her some time ago. Its a red box and it says 1951 festival of britain on the cover. I believe it contains 10 coins in it. I have not been able to find anything on this set of coins. My father won it as a child in a raffle at a big coin show in new england. He said it had to be worth a lot because they were escorted to the car by armed guards. He also said a man offered him a few hundred dollars for the box and only the box. This was in the early 1960's. My grandfather long since passed was the big collector in the family. He told my father that the set was rare as a whole in that box because a ship containing the majority of the sets sank on its way to america. Thats about all I know about them. He once tried to get a coin dealer to appraise them, but the dealer just wanted to keep offering him 100 dollars cash for it, insisting it was not worth much more than that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yep you got it, they have aquires 65 sets from the original issue of 20,000 sets, of 1951 Festival of Britain Proof Collection, for the princely sum of £395.00 GBP I guess thats approx $750? NICE FIND

The sets the mint are selling have new packaging. The sets in the original boxes are often available on e-bay. The box colours seem to vary, as does the condition. Most of The Royal Mint packaging for proof sets from this time does not seem to age very well. It is quite hard to find a set with a box in good condition. My set has a blue box. I am not sure if the box colour is significant. I know the Crown pieces that were issued at the same time also came in different colour boxes.

There is a set on ebay at the moment that ends in 2 days and 20 hours in a red box, currently at £46.

I can understand why he was offering this seemingly high amount for the box - a 'complete set' must include the box and he was probably expecting the final value of his boxless set to be boosted by a lot more than that. Tsk.. still seems like a low trick to me.. Very fascinating story about the ship sinking by the way, I have never heard anything of it before.

In Spink 2013 the 1951 set in FDC is valued at £250. Not the best sets to invest in.

Don't buy from The Royal Mint.Always available cheaper elsewhere.I'm sure you could pick a set up at 50% of catalogue. They actually tried to sell circulated pre 1947 6d's at £20 each (major newspaper adverts) when these are available in commerce for 50p.
